Two scoring droughts, totalling 10 minutes, were CSU's downfall on the road.
LOGAN, Utah – A pair of scoring droughts, including a six-minute one in the second half, were the eventual downfall for Colorado State as the Rams lost at Utah State, 77-61, in Logan Saturday night. In having their five-game winning streak snapped, the Rams dropped to 14-8 and 5-4 in the Mountain West, while the Aggies improved to 16-6 and 5-4 in the league.
The Rams were unable to get the offense rolling early, as Utah State built a 14-point lead at 25-11 with 8:22 to play in the opening 20 minutes. However as they have done virtually all season, CSU scrapped back, forcing nine Aggie turnovers and outscored the hosts 17-6 over the final stretch to go into the break trailing by three, 31-28.
The two teams went back and forth early in the second half, as CSU eventually grabbed a 52-50 lead with 12 minutes to go in the game. However, the Rams were scoreless over 6:26, Utah State scored 13 unanswered points, and the Aggies led 63-52 with 5:43 to play in the game. CSU got back on the board with a pair of Isaiah Stevens free throws, but couldn't get the margin closer than 10 in the final five minutes.
For the game, CSU shot just 37.3 percent (22-of-59) from the floor and was limited to 29.2 percent (7-of-24) beyond the arc. Utah State shot a stellar 59.2 percent (29-of-49) in the contest, including 68 percent (17-of-25) in the second half. The Aggies won the battle of the boards 35-26.
CSU was led by sophomore Adam Thistlewood and redshirt-senior Nico Carvacho who tallied 14 each. Freshman David Roddy was the only other Ram in double figures with 10. Utah State was led by reigning Player of the Year Sam Merrill with 28 points.
