Rams Fall 74-63 in Reno

1/29/2020 10:03:00 PM | Women's Basketball

RENO, Nev. – The Colorado State women's basketball team lost a shootout against Nevada 74-63 Wednesday evening at the Lawlor Events Center.

The Wolf Pack thrived shooting the ball with a staggering 50-percent clip (29-of-58) after entering the contest averaging a 40.3 percent from the floor. Nevada improved to 10-11 overall – seven of those wins at home – and 3-7 in the Mountain West. Meanwhile, the Rams fell to 10-11 overall and 4-6 within the MW. The season series ends a tie after the Rams got the better hand on New Year's Day.

The silver lining for the Rams was the play from junior guard Lore Devos who put up a team-high 17 points in 24 minutes – both season-bests. The Belgium native added five rebounds for her most complete outing in her fifth game back from missing 14 consecutive games earlier in the season.

"Nevada disrupted us defensively and we had no rhythm at all on the offensive side," head coach Ryun Williams said. "We did not handle their resistance whether it was in the passing lanes, catching or getting open. Defensively, we contested shots, but not enough as they shot 50-percent overall on the night. We just didn't have the pop from the get-go and that is disappointing."

The Wolf Pack also did a lot of their damage from behind to arc, shooting 38.1 percent (8-of-21) after entering the game averaging a 28.5 percent clip – ninth in the Mountain West. Six of those long balls came in the first half to build Nevada's cushion. The Rams shot 40-percent (6-of-15) from 3.

The first half was a shootout with Nevada outdueling the Rams 51.6 percent to 42.9 percent in shots for the 39-31 lead. In the first 20 minutes, Nevada was 6-of-14 shooting for 42.8 percent from trey land.

The Rams struck first off an Andrea Brady offensive rebound and put back, but it was the Wolf Pack that built an advantage as high as 11 points. CSU closed the quarter on a 6-0 run in final two minutes, including a Brady buzzer beater. With 2.8 seconds left to play in the opening frame, the Rams executed an out-of-bounds play under their own basket to Brady who kissed it off the glass to pull the deficit to five at 20-15.

Neither team could find success shooting in the first five minutes of the second quarter. Shots started falling for both squads after the five-minute mark, but three 3s extended Nevada's lead to a dozen at one point. Bonnarens connected on a fadeaway in CSU's final possession to bring the Rams back under double digits to close the first half.

Colorado State cut it to five points three separate times in the third quarter, but each time the Wolf Pack answered, denying the Rams the opportunity to chip away at the deficit. Seven of Devos' 17 points came in the quarter. Bonnarens hit a contested shot off glass to make it 54-49 with under two minutes to go, but three CSU turnovers crippled that Ram run for Nevada to head into the fourth with a 58-49 lead.

The fourth was much like the previous frame with the Wolf Pack responding to each Ram push. Colorado State pulled within seven early, but Nevada strengthened it back to 11 points and did not let up down the stretch to secure the win.

"Lore is a great basketball player," Williams added. "She sees the floor well. She shoots it and can drive it. Her minutes increased which is encouraging news for us going forward. We are better when she is in there, especially when we play her at the five-spot where she is a mismatch on the opponent's other five. She has a point-guard mentality that can distribute as well, so we need to get to that more in our game."

Next, the Rams continue their road trip traveling to Las Vegas to play the UNLV Lady Rebels on Saturday, Feb. 1 with a 3 p.m. PT tip.
