LAS VEGAS – The Colorado State women's basketball team suffered a 56-52 loss to UNLV Saturday afternoon at the Cox Pavilion.
The Rams led 50-46 with 2:36 to play before the Lady Rebels raffled off 10 consecutive points to deny Colorado State its upset. CSU fell to 10-12 overall and 4-7 in the Mountain West, while UNLV improved to 11-10 and 7-3 within the conference.
"Defensively, I cannot ask for anything more, but it comes down to shots and we weren't making them," head coach Ryun Williams said. "We have to make shots. It's that simple. We had four turnovers down the stretch that were silly and having trouble getting the ball inbounds. At the end of the day, we shot 13 percent. I see what I think are good shooters and good looks, but we aren't making them."
Makenzie Ellis led the Rams in scoring with 15 points with Andrea Brady chipping in a dozen. On the glass, Megan Jacobs had a team-high 10 rebounds that tied her career-best mark. As a team, CSU went 33.3 percent from the floor, while the Lady Rebels didn't fare better at 31 percent, but UNLV's 26.7 from distance against CSU's 13 percent made the difference.
Early on it was clear that the matchup of Mountain West's top-2 defenses was going to be a close game. The lead never was larger than eight points. At the first media timeout, the Rams trailed 6-4, but followed with a 10-0 run that created their early cushion. Lore Devos off the bench had a game-high eight points in the first frame to help the Rams to a 15-10 lead.
The first five minutes of the second quarter mirrored that of the first with both teams struggling to score. The game's fourth tie came at 19-all before UNLV took the lead briefly with a 3 but Brady clapped right back with one of her own to retake the Ram lead. Megan Jacobs followed her own miss for a put back to cap the scoring in the first half and take CSU into the locker room with a 26-23 advantage. Devos and Ellis each had a game-high eight points at the break.
The hoops stayed covered in the third with one bucket owned by the Rams between the start and the media timeout. An official review late in the third accessed UNLV's top producer, Rodjanae Wade, a technical foul to make her foul total at four.
Teams went back and forth to start the fourth, but it seemed to go the Rams way after Ellis converted an and-one opportunity to give the Rams the three-point lead. On the next time down the floor, Tori Williams sank a jumper to go up 46-41 heading into the midpoint of the quarter. Five-straight Lady Rebels' points tied the game for the sixth time and final time.
On a Brady offensive rebound, Wade's picked up her fifth and last foul. Going to the line in the bonus, Brady made both. Coming out of a timeout, Brady hit CSU's last meaningful basket to get to that 50-46 lead before UNLV made their last run to overtake the game.
Next, the Rams return home to play Fresno State inside Moby Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 5 with a 7 p.m. MT tip.
