LAS VEGAS – Colorado State looks to come away from the season's only two-game road trip with a split when the Rams take on the UNLV Lady Rebels in Saturday's 3 p.m. tip at Cox Pavilion.
On Wednesday, the Rams lost at Nevada, 74-63, while the Lady Rebels enjoyed an off date, so they are coming into the contest on a six-day break from their loss at San Diego State last Saturday. In the Mountain West standings, the Rams (4-6) reside in seventh, while the Lady Rebels (6-3) stand in fourth.
The matchup will be one of defense as both squads go 1-2 in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense in the Mountain West with UNLV occupying the top spot. In games in which their defenses have limited their opponents to less than 50 points, the Rams have six to the Lady Rebels' four.
This marks the first meeting between UNLV and CSU this season. The Lady Rebels will make their way to Fort Collins 18 days after Saturday's contest. Last season, the series was split with the home team victorious in both occasions. UNLV defeated the Rams in the regular season finale.
Off The Tip
• Last time out, the Rams lost to the Wolf Pack, which split the season series as the home team won each time. CSU cut their deficit to five points three times in the third quarter but could not get closer in their loss. The Wolf Pack thrived shooting the ball with a staggering 50-percent clip (29-of-58) after entering the contest averaging a 40.3 percent from the floor. The Rams' silver lining was the play of junior guard Lore Devos who put up a team-high 17 points in 24 minutes – both season-bests. She added five rebounds in her fifth game back from missing 14 consecutive games earlier in the season.
• It's a homecoming game for Megan Jacobs who went to Bishop Gorman High School – approximately 14 miles west of the Cox Pavilion. The redshirt-junior was named Las Vegas Review-Journal Second Team All-State in her senior season
• Forwards Andrea Brady and Makenzie Ellis have been the Rams' stalwart as of late. Ellis has double-digit scoring games in 10 of the past 12 contests. Since the turn of the calendar, Ellis has poured in 122 points in eight games (15.3 ppg). In the same time frame, Brady has compiled 75 rebounds (9.4 rpg) with 74 points (9.3 ppg). Brady's 23-rebound performance against San Jose State represents stands third in NCAA DI this season, while it set a single-game record at CSU.
• Colorado State's floor general, Tori Williams, is back. After missing four games, Tori Williams returned for the Tulsa game. Since, Since, she has averaged 10.4 ppg, 2.0 3FG/G, and 2.7 apg in 35 mpg across the eight games. She has played the most minutes for the Rams in four of the past five contests.
• Defense continues to be the Rams' specialty. Twelve times this season CSU, the MW second-best scoring defense (59.7 ppg), has held an opponent to 60 points or less. Six times it has been below 50 points - a feat not replicated in the MW. Fourteen times this season, CSU held its opponent to under 10 points in a quarter including four times it has been under five points.
• Ball control a strength for the Rams. CSU has had less turnovers than its opponent in all but five games (UIW, BSU, NM, AFA, at NEV), ranking first in the Mountain West in turnovers per game (11.3), which checks in third nationally. The turnover margin (+4.1) is second in the MW and 42nd in the NCAA. In all but four games (SDSU, BSU, TUL, NM), the Rams have scored more points off of the turnovers than its counterpart.
• Redshirt-senior forward Andrea Brady has pulled in a team-high 185 rebounds, which ranks third in the Mountain West and 53rd in the NCAA. Average-wise that pans out to 8.8 a game for third in the conference and 73rd nationally. She has five double-digit board games with a high of 23 and has had at least six in all but two games. She is on pace for 264 rebounds which would put her near the CSU's all-time top-10 single-season record list.
