Third-most points in Rams history to start 2020-21
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – On the back of a program record eight 3s by Tori Williams, the Colorado State women's basketball team started the long-awaited 2020-21 season in style, defeating Regis University 111-64 Wednesday evening at Moby Arena.
Â
The 111 total points is the most in Ryun Williams' era and the third-most in school history behind a 118 output in 1982 and a 121-point game in 1979. The guard Williams became the program record holder alongside Becky Hammon, Kim Mestdagh, Sara Hunter and Jamie Patrick with her eight treys. She finished with a new career-high 30 points, besting her previous mark of 29 when she was a freshman at Utah two seasons ago.
Â
For the sixth time under Ryun Williams' guidance, the Rams start the season at 1-0. However, tonight he was watching from home due to COVID-19 contact tracing and assistant coach Rico Burkett took the in-person role. All 16 Rams clocked into the game including nine debuts in the CSU uniform, which counts four freshmen, three transfers and two redshirts – Sydney Mech and Bengisu Alper – from last season.
Â
"There was a lot of uncertainty on the season leading up to it and even this week we got given more adversity with Ryun out for COVID-19 contact tracing," Burkett said. "However, our players and staff responded to it the right way and made sure we didn't miss a beat. No matter what cards are dealt, you must show up and that is what they did. Team-wise, we bring a lot of weapons and balance this year. It showed what we are capable of but still have a lot to work on."
Â
It didn't take long for the Rams to score as the first quarter concluded with a lead of 28-21, but it was the second frame in which the defense tightened up and the offense created its initial cushion that would grow in the second half. CSU started the second quarter on a 14-0 run and limited the Rangers to 23.1% shooting.
Â
The third quarter was a one-point away from an exact replica of the second with CSU outscoring RU 31-12. This time the Rams closed out the quarter with eight unanswered points. By the start of the fourth a 44-point lead was in hand and the Rams coasted to their first victory of the 2020-21.
Â
"It has been a crazy time," Tori Williams said on the season. "We really didn't know what was going to happen, but we wanted to come back in the summer and really work on our chemistry. Tonight, it showed that it definitely helped."
Â
Statistically, freshman Cali Clark got the start at the five position and picked up a team-high seven rebounds and 11 points, while fellow freshman starter Ellie Boni chipped in seven points. Newcomer from Seton Hall, McKenna Hofschild, dished out 10 assists, which was three more than any Ram collected last season in a single game. Graduate transfer from Wisconsin-Green Bay, Karly Murphy, was CSU's second leading scorer with 14.
