Ali Kallner’s 3,000-meter School Record Highlights Rams in Split Meet Day
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M./AMES, Iowa – With the Colorado State track and field teams in competition at two separate meets Friday, it was the group at the Iowa State Classic that made the most noise including four results that land on the school's top-20 all-time list for their respective events.
Redshirt-senior Ali Kallner set the school record in the 3,000-meter invited race with a time of 9:26.93 – an improvement of over 30 seconds on her previous personal record that stood at No. 20 on the list that she now leads. The Scottsdale, Ariz. product unseated Nicole Peters' 2012 mark of 9:27.18. Kallner finished ninth in the race, which was her season debut in the event.
Staying on the women's side, redshirt-sophomores Lily Tomasula-Martin and Sarah Carter in the 5,000 meters notched the ninth and 13th-best times in school history. It wasn't always that though as Carter who was in the early race jumped to 12th before her teammate slid her down a spot. Tomasula-Martin, of Estes Park, Colo., placed 12th in the 5,000-meter invite race with a time of 16:47.23 – over 15 seconds faster than her previous PR that was No. 15 on the school list. Carter, a transfer from Washington, took third in the other 5K at 17:00.74 – about five seconds quicker than her PR with the Huskies.
The men just competed in the 5,000-meter races and didn't slouch either. Senior Forrest Barton jumped from the No. 20 spot on the school list to No. 10 after running a 14:17.69, improving almost 25 seconds on his previous PR. In the 5K invite race, senior Eric Hamer, CSU's recorder holder in the event, clocked a 13:43.62 for third place. It didn't overtake his own school-best mark that he set earlier this season, but it still would be at the top of the list as second place is 13:44.24.
Day two of the Iowa State Classic for the Rams starts at 12:30 CT with the mile races.
Approximately 850 miles away if in a straight line, the other Rams were competing inside the Albuquerque Convention Center also home to the Mountain West Championships at the end of the month.
Three personal records and a new top-20 entrant highlighted action for the final day of the Don Kirby Invitational.
Making her season debut in a CSU uniform, Lauren Gale tied her PR in the 400 meters of 54.25, which is the school's No. 2 mark. In the 60 meters, Nia Powdrell clocked a 7.69 to rise to the 16th spot on CSU's all-time list but trails her personal record of 7.54 that she achieved at Portland State. Two Rams, Tarynn Sieg and Maria Muzzio, finished in the top-5 of the shot put with a third and fourth place showing, respectively.
The PRs for the men came from the shot put circle. True Freshman Mariano Kis tossed a 55'3.75'' for an improvement of five inches. Redshirt-junior Beau Gordon measured a 55'0.75'' throw for an increase of 1'8.50'' on his previous best.
Coaches' Perspective
Head coach Brian Bedard
On wrapping up Don Kirby Invitational…
"I thought we had some highlights in most of our event groups. Several season and lifetime bests, but we also had some rough spots we need to iron out before the Mountain West Championships."
Head distance coach Art Siemers
On day one of Iowa State Classic…
"It was a really good start. We have gone to the Washington meet the last seven years, so it was hard to change and try something new, but it was a good decision. Our student-athletes will say the vibe and meet is super well run at Iowa State, which creates an atmosphere that leads to great performances. The three highlights today were from Lily [Tomasula-Martin], Eric [Hamer], and of course Ali [Kallner]."
On Lily's run…
"She is such great teammate and competitor in practice, so it is great to see her execute out there. She set herself up well leading up to the conference meet."
On Eric's race…
"He didn't get PR but he showed that his Boston performance [school record in December] wasn't a fluke. He had a tough race at CU the other week and has really rebounded. He went up against some of the best in country today and still did very well. It's a big confidence booster for him."
On Ali…
"She rarely runs the 3K, but she was ready for the challenge and she ran a perfect race. She started off in the back but worked her way up diligently and capped it with a great finish. It was funny, they were doing a new system of timing chips and at first, she didn't get the record, but it recalculated, and she was ecstatic, which was an awesome moment. It takes a lot of coachability to improve like she has time-wise."
