Rams Battle Back From 19 Down For Border War Win at Wyoming

2/15/2020 5:59:00 PM | Men's Basketball

CSU posts its largest comeback in more than 20 years to earn a Border War sweep

LARAMIE, Wyo.  – These Rams NEVER SAY QUIT! Trailing by 19 points with 14:06 to play, Colorado State came all the way back for its biggest come-from-behind victory in more than 20 years, winning at Wyoming 77-70 Saturday afternoon. In sweeping this year's Border War, the Rams improved to 18-9 overall and 9-5 in Mountain West play, while the Cowboys fell to 6-20 and 1-13 in the league.

Wyoming led most of the game, as the Rams could not find a rhythm on offense or set of stops on defense, trailing by as many as 11 in the first half, eight at halftime and 19 with just under six minutes gone in the final 20. After a CSU timeout, it started to click, as the visitors went on a 10-0 run over the next 1:59 to cut the margin to single digits at 54-45. The margin dipped to four with 5:20 to play on a triple by redshirt-senior Kris Martin, but the Cowboys pushed it back to eight at the final media timeout. From there, Colorado State put the clamps on, holding Wyoming scoreless over the final 4:19, with a three giving CSU a 72-70 lead with 39 seconds to play and four straight free throws from the Frisco, Texas native sealing the win.

Colorado State finished the game at 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the field, including 14-of-30 (46.7 percent) in the final 20 minutes. Wyoming also shot 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the floor for the contest. The Rams dominated the glass, 52-26, including getting 18 offensive rebounds, and went 26-of-40 at the charity stripe as compared to 13-of-17 for Wyoming.

Five Rams were in double figures, led by freshman Isaiah Stevens 14 points and four assists. Martin finished with 13 points and five rebounds, all coming in the second half including scoring seven points and grabbing three rebounds in the key final two minutes of play. Sophomore Kendle Moore had 12, with redshirt-senior Nico Carvacho tallying 11 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. Freshman David Roddy was the other CSU player in double figures with 10. Wyoming had four in double digits, led by Hunter Maldonado's 17 points.
