Hidden-dual format in New Mexico puts them side by side
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – This weekend provides one last glimpse for the entire team in the fall, while a pair of doubles teams get to extend the tournament season another week. Either way, Colorado State women's tennis coach Mai-Ly Tran see this as a building point for the entire roster when they play at the New Mexico Halloween Invitational this Friday through Sunday.
Â
"As a team, this is an opportunity for everybody to get in doubles and singles matches and preview the spring season," Tran said. "I want to finish the team season strong, even though we do have another tournament to follow for four of them.
Â
"I think through each tournament they've improved. They had a great regionals tournament, and I think this is a good tournament to see everybody compete, and also use the matches to prepare for nationals. I'm very happy with how the team is playing and how they keep improving, and they've been practicing really hard and looking to get better. I think they're very hungry for the next competition."
Â
The four-team field, which includes host New Mexico, New Mexico State and Northern Arizona, will be played in a hidden-dual format. Each team will play each other in a round-robin approach, using 1-3 spots for doubles, 1-6 for singles, but doubles and singles matches against each other will be played on different days. There will not be team scores, however.
Â
Friday, Colorado State will play New Mexico State in doubles at 11:30 a.m., then play New Mexico in singles at 1 p.m.; Saturday the Rams face New Mexico in doubles at 11:30 a.m. and NAU in singles at 1:30 p.m.; Sunday's slate is doubles vs. NAU (9:30 a.m.), then singles with NMSU (11 a.m.).
Â
"I think it's great to play in a dual-match atmosphere," Tran said. "Everybody is competing for each other, we're playing at the same time and side by side. I think with this being a cohesive team, that's one of our strengths. It's going to be great seeing people out there playing more for their teammates than in past tournaments."
Â
The doubles teams of Radka Buzkova and Matea Mihaljevic and Somer Dalla-Bona and Sarka Richterova both reached the finals of the ITA Mountain Regional, playing each other in a match the Buzkova-Mihaljevic pairing won. This fall, they have compiled a 12-1 mark, while the Dalla-Bona-Richterova pairing was new, going 5-1 that weekend. Both teams will finish their fall campaign at the ITA Fall Nationals, competed Nov. 4-7 in San Diego.
Â
Buzkova has posted a 9-2 mark this fall in singles; while Lucia Natal is 4-0 after being limited to one tournament. Richterova has a 5-5 mark in singles.
