Rams Cap Week with Another Doubleheader
11/11/2021 7:02:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Rams Play Northern Colorado at 5:30 p.m. on Friday Before Men’s Game
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Moby Arena is running it back with a doubleheader of Colorado State basketball since Tuesday went so well with the women and men's team starting their respective seasons with wins in front of fans again for the first time since 2020.
Â
The CSU women will play Northern Colorado at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men against Arkansas Pine-Bluff with tip going up 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. Fans who attend the WBB game prior, may stay for the MBB game. They must move to Section C and sit above row 21. Tickets to the women's game can be bought at CSURams.com/WBBTickets.
Â
On Tuesday, the Rams handed Colorado Christian a 77-42 defeat in a game that was never in doubt as the Rams led throughout. Despite an almost even mix of returners (seven) and newcomers (five), there were glimpses of last year's style that flaunted the nation's 16th-best scoring offense. Freshman guard Anna Prim dropped a team-high 14 points and drained four 3s, marking the most points by a freshman in a season opener since 2017 and the most treys from a frosh in head coach Ryun Wiliams' era.
Â
"Tuesday was spectacular for our program, the men's program and our fans in general inside Moby Arena," head coach Ryun Williams said. "The atmosphere inside the arena was a reminder of how much it was truly missed over the course of last season. In the game, we saw moments that our team really developed, but also saw lulls and situations we still need to iron out, which is par for the course this early in the season. The team did answer the challenge brought on by the coaching staff of working the ball around and finding the best shot. We had over 20 assists and were getting better opportunities the more we moved the ball."
Â
Northern Colorado (0-1) opened its season Tuesday with 71-41 loss at Arizona State after hosting Regis in an exhibition the Thursday prior to a tone of a 77-58 win. The Bears return five letterwinners, including three starters and contain nine newcomers on a roster that also has a new face at the helm in head coach Kristen Mattio. Last season, UNC finished 14-12 with a 12-7 Big Sky record.
Â
"No matter the season, location or time of year, this game will always be a battle," Ryun Williams said on Northern Colorado. "It is the closest rivalry distance-wise for both teams. Coach Mattio brings a winning culture and mentality to the program that we as a staff and team need to be ready from the tip."

Â
Preseason Mountain West Awards
• The Preseason Mountain West awards came out on Oct. 13th and pinned the Rams to finish fourth in the 11-team conference. Additionally, Hofschild was named to the five-person All-MW team. The Prior Lake, Minn, native started every game last season, averaging 13.4 points and led the MW in assists with 5.4 per game en route to being named the MW Newcomer of the Year and earn an All-MW nod.
Â
Last Time Out
• The Rams preyed on Colorado Christian, 77-42, dominating the ratio in points from turnovers (24-2), points in the paint (32-8), fast break points (22-3) and bench points (36-16). Offensively, eight Rams scored at least five points with four reaching double digits, but none more than freshman Anna Prim's 14 points. It marked the first frosh to lead the team in scoring for a season opener since Lore Devos' 25 in 2017. Facilitating well, CSU tallied 24 assists led by Hofschild's 10 -- tying her career-best mark. Last season, CSU had two games with at least 20 assists. The win upped Ryun Williams to 7-3 all-time in season-opening games at CSU, including four straight.
Â
Newcomers
• New to the Rams' locker room are freshmen Anna Prim, Clara Gomez and Jess Moors in addition to transfers Kendyll Kinzer and Upe Atosu. Moors' is the younger sister of James Moors who is a sophomore on the CSU men's basketball team. Prim and Gomez both hail from Spain and were teammates before on their club team. Kinzer is a familiar face in the conference coming from Fresno State, while Atosu is a graduate transfer from Butler.
Â
Returners
• This 2021-22 Rams return seven student-athletes and two starters from last season's squad. Junior McKenna Hofschild and sophomore Cali Clark account for the two starters, but low post players Karly Murphy and Sydney Mech combined to start 12 games last season and will solidify the Rams in the front court. The other three returners include Petra Farkas, Bengisu Alper and Makayla Hemingway.
Â
The Coaching Matchup
• For the second week in a row, the Rams are facing a first time NCAA D1 head coach. CCU's Diane Thompson was a first time head coach overall whereas UNC's Kristen Mattio made the jump from NCAA DII to DI this season. Before getting announced as the UNC head coach in May, she was the head coach at West Texas A&M where she made the DII National Tournament five of the last six seasons. She compiled an overall record of 154-35 with the Lady Buffs.
Â
Rams Needing Moby Arena Love
• Prior to last Wednesday's season opener, not a single Ram on the 2021-22 roster had played a regular-season home game in front of fans at Moby Arena. Last week's exhibition was the first organized game in front of fans. Ironically, junior Kendyll Kinzer was the only outlier as she played in a fan-filled Moby Arena when she was playing for Fresno State.
