Roumeliotis Sets Program Record with 36 Digs against UNLV

2/20/2021 3:31:00 PM | Volleyball

Colorado State dropped its second match against the Rebels Saturday afternoon.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – With only one day of practice to polish up on the team's skills from their defeat on Thursday, the crew was ready to come back to avenge their shortcomings and show what CSU volleyball was made of.

Despite losing the match 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-20), Saturday's contest showed great improvement from the sweep the Rams suffered only a short two days prior.

Instead of allowing the Rebels to get away with an easy win, the crew buckled down and didn't let small mistakes dishearten them.

"The whole match today, in my opinion, gave our team a little bit better feeling about themselves," coach Tom Hilbert said. "Winning the first set was a big thing because we have not been playing well in first sets in a lot of the matches we've been in. I think that was a really positive thing for us. Our team stayed competitive throughout the entire match."

Similar to the first match against UNLV, the team still put up good numbers. Breana Runnels and Sasha Colombo held the highest number of kills, with 14 and 10 respectively. Ciera Zimmerman contributed 37 assists to the team's stats. Overall, the crew collected 79 digs, 36 of which were contributed by Alexa Roumeliotis, which set a program record for a four-set match.

"It was a fun match. UNLV kept us in those long rallies, which is how I was able to get that many digs because they did a good job in the transition game," Roumeliotis said. "It was a tough match. We came out and played hard and played better than we did on Thursday, which was good to see that improvement."

Hilbert said the team improved in several key areas, especially on defense. He saw the team flourish in digging and blocking which contributed to the tight race throughout the match.

"We stayed very consistent and we didn't have a lot of serving errors," Hilbert said. "We were the better serving team. Really for the whole night, I thought we were the better serving team. Ten aces, five errors, that's outstanding. It's even more impressive that we served that well and they still won the match. I think if you really look at what happened here, it was about how good of defense UNLV played. We were taking good swings and they were digging everything. I think it led to some frustration and a lot of rallies ended with hitting errors or getting blocked. That's something that we have to go into practice this next week and fix."

Now in fifth in the Mountain West standings at 3-3, the Rams have just less than a week to prepare for their Border War game against the Wyoming.

STAT OF THE MATCH
Senior libero recorded 36 digs in the four-set match, breaking the all-time program record that was held by Lindsey Kerr at Utah, Nov. 15, 2002
