Colorado State recorded its first sweep of the season in the first of two Border Wars for this weekend.
LARAMIE, Wyo. – It's been a bumpy start to the season for the Colorado State volleyball, but Friday night it looked smooth in UniWyo Sports Complex as the Rams recorded their first sweep of the season against Wyoming.
Â
"I think we were the more mature team, with the exception of the first five points of the first set," said head coach Tom Hilbert. "When you're winning the pass battle that sets things up easier for you. We also took advantage of our outside hitting; both outside hitters had great matchups from a blocking standpoint. That was the basis of our offense and everyone else pitched in."
Â
The first set is where all the action happened, as there were eight tie scores and the only lead change of the match. The frame went 30-28 with Colorado State grabbing each set point. The second and third set, the Rams grabbed leads in both and never gave it up as there was just three tie scores combined.
Â
STAT OF THE MATCH
Colorado State finished the sweep with a season-high .355 hitting mark, including hitting .765 in the final frame.
Â
NOTES
- Breana Runnels lead the offense with 18 kills, hitting .279 and adding four digs and a pair of aces
- Jacqi Van Liefde followed with a 10-kill performance, hitting a blistering .533
- Karina Leber controlled the night tonight, putting up four blocks, while adding five kills and hitting .455
- Ciera Zimmerman dished out 39 assists in the sweep and recorded five digs and three blocks
- Alexa Roumeliotis kept her solid defense, tallying 15 digs
Â
QUOTES…
Tom Hilbert on the offense…
"Breana Runnels played really incredibly well and just stayed composed. She just doesn't emote or go nuts, she just makes smart shots. She is a savvy player – she is tipping when she needs to, she hits roll shots when she needs to, she really just has a full arsenal of things to do. I was very happy for her."
Â
Tom Hilbert on the defense…
"Alexa Roumeliotis is playing with a lot of maturity and we need that anchor on defense. She did a really nice job, not just digging the ball, but also controlling what was going on with our defense. Wyoming is a team that has a lot of weapons, but if you block them properly and funnel them right, you'll get to convert some digs."

UP NEXT
Colorado State will stay in Laramie for Part 2 of the Border War tomorrow night starting at 6 p.m., on the Mountain West Network.
