Grijalva picks up 59th career singles victory
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Back on the courts after a 24-day break between matches, Colorado State dropped a non-conference road dual 6-1 to Grand Canyon, but the play had coach Jarod Camerota somewhat encouraged, all things considered.
Â
The Rams picked up their lone point from Alyssa Grijalva at the No. 4 singles spot, as she weathered an up-and-down match to post a 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Joely Lomas. It was the 59th career singles win for Grijalva, who ranks eighth in program history on the list.
Â
"She has this extra year, and she's taking advantage of it and approaching it in a very mature and focused way," Camerota said. "She's really taking advantage of it and not taking it for granted. Her match was super up and down. She was down early in the third. Emma Corwin and Lou Regen, they fought hard in their matches. You know they're going to fight, win or lose. You know it's going to be a battle."
Â
The Rams dropped the other three-set matches on the day, with Lou Regen falling at No. 3 (6-7 {4-7}, 6-3, 10-7), as did No. 5 player Emma Corwin (6-3, 6-7 {4-7}, 10-4). All three doubles matches were tight, with GCU earning the point with wins at the Nos. 2-3 spots, both by two-game margin, while All-Mountain West performer Priscilla Palermo made her season debut with the No. 1 team, which did not finish.
Â
The Rams has lost four scheduled matches for health and safety concerns, as well as weather from the latest spring storm, which wiped out a match with New Mexico State, slated for the day before. Camerota felt his team played better in many aspects considering the layoff and despite the final score.
Â
"I have to come off this match sort of positive, considering it all," Camerota said. "It was a good match to break in. Yeah, we want to win, but I felt decent about it. We're going to keep getting better, and I felt that we even got better from our last matches on Feb. 20.
Â
"It's odd to say that, but we're actually not in a bad spot. We're excited to have Priscilla Palermo back, at least playing doubles today, and we hope to get her back for singles. Considering it all, I feel good about today."
Colorado State returns to action March 27-28 in San Jose, Calif., opening the Mountain West season with duals against Wyoming and host San Jose State.
