Women Place Third and Men Finish Fourth in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS – Under clear skies and a heating up sun, the Colorado State women finished in third place, while the men placed fourth Friday morning in the Mountain West Cross Country Championships.

It was 58 degrees at the start of the women's race at 9 a.m. PT on the Craig Ranch Regional Park course, and by the end of the award ceremonies it was knocking on 70. The race was the Rams' third of the brief season, but hopefully not the last for the women who could hear their names called on Sunday's NCAA Selection Show at 1 p.m. on ncaa.com. The men's results the last two meets have them on the outside.

After getting projected fourth in the preseason poll, the women exceeded expectations, finishing behind two nationally ranked teams in No. 3 New Mexico and No. 11 Boise State. Leading the Rams was Lily Tomasula-Martin and Lauren Offerman who both earned All-Mountain West Second Team honors. Tomasula-Martin crossed the finish line of the 6,000-meter race in ninth place at 20:23.7 to obtain her second all-conference honors in as many years. Offerman was not far behind, clocking a 20:36.2 for 11th place – a 23-place improvement from the 2019 MW XC Championships. Ivy Gonzales and Emily Chaston were the next Rams at 17th and 20th, respectively, while the Lauren Neugeboren wrapped up the scoring in 30th with two Rams right behind her.

The men fell short of their preseason favorite title in an inconsistent season that saw a different Ram finish first in each of the three races, which echoed down the line as well. Today, Mason Brown stepped up to finished 14th overall in the 8K race at 24:05.6 – good for an All-MW second team nod. Jacob Brueckman crossed two spots later and then Noah Bodewes in 19th, but a gap of Rams presented itself until Dawson LaRance and Tom Oates finished the scoring at 31st and 33rd, respectively.

Coaches' Perspective
Art Siemers, head cross country coach
On the women…
"They have had a really good season. They have improved so much from the last cross country season through today in terms of development, mental approach, practicing and just how close they are as a team. It is a dramatic difference. They are getting to a place where they are one of the better teams in the country. Today, we showed our depth in a competitive field. Our 10th runner, Lauren Neugeboren, didn't know she was running until a 10th spot was added and she ended up being our fifth finisher, which just goes to show how our depth is on this squad. Anyone can score. Our loss is to No. 1-ranked New Mexico and Boise State who is better than their No. 11 rankings. Hopefully, they get a chance to represent Colorado State next week for the NCAA Championships, but that is up to the committee."

On the men's side…
"The shining spot was Mason Brown who struggled on this course two weeks ago, but he really turned it around. He said he was going to do it and he did it. I think he was a little more composed than others. Our team got a little too aggressive early in the conditions today. Hopefully, we learn that lesson. We must right that ship quick because this is now back-to-back showings that weren't good. With outdoor track season in a few weeks, we have a quick turnaround to get our confidence back."
