Colorado State Soccer Losses 2-0 to New Mexico in Finale
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  – The Mountain Division Champion Lobos proved to be just that on Sunday afternoon, defeating Colorado State 2-0 in the season finale at the UNM Soccer Complex. Â
Â
New Mexico obtained early momentum when its leading goal scorer, Gwen Maly, knocked in a score in the game's opening minute. It was not all Lobos though from there as the Rams rose to the level of play and started to put pressure on in an attempt to answer. In the 12th minute, Taylor Steinke narrowly missed the post on a tipped shot that resulted in a corner that Gracie Armstrong got a head on. A few minutes later, Sam Studt had a header shot on goal that the Lobo keeper was able to corral. CSU's last notable attack in the first half and eventually the game came from Haylee Blach in the 30th minute but to no avail. Â
Â
The four corners in the first half showed that Colorado State was on the verge of making it a competitive contest but an early second-half UNM goal and a tighter Lobo defense caused the second half to be control mostly by the red jerseys. CSU's only corner of the second half did not come until the 88th minute.
Â
New Mexico had 14 shots to CSU's nine with the shots on goal ratio at 5 to 4, respectively. Freshman Ram goalkeeper Jessica Arnold got the starting nod and had three saves. Sam Studt found the most looks with three shots for the Rams.
Â
Colorado State concludes the season at 2-4-1, while the Lobos (9-1) will take their four-game win streak into the Mountain West Championship game on April 17th.
