Eric Hamer Defends his 10K Title, Jordan Lanning Concludes Day One Leading the Heptathlon
CLOVIS, Calif. – Under the lights in the twilight of day one of the Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday, Eric Hamer coasted to a 10,000-meter title, making it a back-to-back occurrence, and giving the Colorado State men the first medal of the conference meet.
Â
Hamer, of Monument, Colo., notched the fourth-best MW Championship time in the 10K when he crossed at 29:40.25 – 2.07 seconds slower than his 2018 third-place finish that stands third-best on that list. The time was faster than his 2019 first-place finish of 30:34.86. As a freshman at the 2017 meet, he finished just outside of scoring in ninth place with a time of 32:24.16 and now he cements his legacy as one of four individuals who have won two 10K titles, joining Luke Caldwell (UNM, 2013-14), Ben Payne (AF, 2002-04) teammate Jerrell Mock (2017-18). Additionally, the title stays in the Ramily for the fourth-straight year with Mock going back-to-back, which is a feat no other school has accomplished in the event.
Â
Freshman Mason Brown crossed in fifth at 29:55.41 to add four points to Hamer's 10 and put CSU men in first place to conclude the opening day of the meet. Rounding out the top-3 is Boise State and Utah State with 11 and 10, respectively.
Â
Following the men's race, Lily Tomasula-Martin finished sixth with a time of 34:10.01 – good for fourth in CSU history. Just missing scoring was Ashlyn Hillyard in ninth place with a time of 35:40.89, which marks the 17th-best time in CSU history. Burgess concluded the Rams day at Veteran's Memorial Stadium when she crossed in 11th at 36.21.19. Tomasula-Martin put the CSU women on the board with three points. Four New Mexico scorers gave the Lobos a healthy 25 points to lead after day one. Boise State and Air Force follow with six and four points, respectively, before the Rams in fourth.
Â
Before the sun went down, the action centered around the decathlon and heptathlon. Jordan Lanning, of Bayfield, Colo., leads the latter of those two multis through four events with a score of 3444 – 61 points ahead of San Diego State's Asia Smith who won the 2020 MW indoor pentathlon. Nevada's Nicole Ader has 3359 points for third and then Lexie Keller stands in fourth with 3262, while Amelia Harvey won the 200m to finish the day on a high note and have 2988 points for seventh.
Â
Through five events of the decathlon, Mauricio Galindo Vega fits into third with 3699 points. He trails the reigning MW indoor heptathlon champion of Air Force Wyatt Murphy (3921) and New Mexico's Camillo Dunninger 3825. Fellow Ram Drew Thompson is ninth with 3307 points. Both Rams recorded personal records in the 100m and 400m, while Galindo Vega upped his PRs in long jump and high jump, but his highest placing was second in the shot put.
Â
The highlight of the multis came from Lanning in the high jump when she raised the bar to 1.82m/5'11.5'' and delivered to not only take that section of the heptathlon, but she matched the 12th-best height in the NCAA this season. The mark is tied for eight in the NCAA West and moved her up to third all-time at CSU. She also PR'd the 200m and shot put. Keller, of Albuquerque, N.M., entered the 100-meter hurdle record book, squeaking in at 19th with a time of 14.19. She also PR'd the shot and 200m.
Â
The decathlon will restart at 10 a.m. PT, starting with the 110mH with the discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1,500 to follow. The heptathlon will resume at 10:30 a.m. with the long jump followed by javelin and 800m. Field events open at 3 p.m. with the women's hammer throw, while the track events don't commence until temperatures dial down at 6 p.m.
