FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Winning has never felt so good.

For Colorado State's soccer team, the victory was a long time coming. With a 0-2-2 record, coach Keeley Hagen was just waiting for the small successes in every game to lead up to one big win.
Â
A 6-0 victory against Idaho State on Sunday checked all the boxes, and each player had a role, and like a well-oiled machine, the Rams rolled over their opponent without any hesitation.

Kaitlyn Abrams got the team started with the first goal at 27:03. Four minutes later, Liv Layton shot another one in. And right before halftime, Gracie Armstrong took another goal for the Rams.

"Our coach makes an emphasis on the process," Kristen Noonan said. "In practice and training, we were just trying to make the little things better. I think overall the process finally clicked and each of us had a role we needed to complete, and we did that."

Not only did the Rams succeed as a team, but individually as well. Noonan set season highs in every category and is joined by Ali Yoshida and Abrams. Layton set her high in assists. All the little things added up to one victory for a developing team.

The Rams outshot the Bengals by 20, 15 of which were shots on the goal. Yoshida and Layton each had two assists. Noonan had back-to-back goals.

"It's a plan every day," Layton said. "We talk about our goals every morning and one of them this morning was shots on goal, and we all achieved that for the most part. Now we see the more shots on goal, the more goals we're going to get. I think we really capitalized on those moments today."

Three goals in each half satisfies Hagen, especially after the work the coaching staff has been putting in. They've been emphasizing the importance of the process.

And with such a big improvement from the last four games of the season, it's hard to not be excited about all of the moving parts coming together.

"We're pretty pleased," Hagen said. "We challenged them at half -- obviously we were up 3-0 -- so we just wanted to continue to knock on the door and get shots on goal. We talked all week about how when we get chances for shots on goal, where we place the ball. I think they executed that well today."

The second half of the game sealed the shutout fate for the Bengals. Noonan put one in at 53:58, and another at 74:16, followed by Armstrong's second goal at 85:58.

The team's celebration at the end of the match was well deserved.

"It's the first win of the season, so we're all super pumped," Layton said. "It was definitely a team effort today. We're all really proud of ourselves."

Going forward, the team has set several objectives. Noonan wants the team to continue to score in key moments. Layton wants to focus on finishing games, and Hagen wants to continue to see progress on the field.

And after setting season highs in every category, the team is well on their way to seeing success, and the next 12 days provide a window to improve even more.

With reinforced confidence, the Rams will play at home and take on San Diego State and New Mexico on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

"It's just a good response," Hagen said. "The hardest thing to do in our game is to score goals. This will hopefully give us a lot of confidence and we're just going to continue at it. Regardless of the opponent, we executed today. That's what happens when you do the processes and you focus on knocking the balls in the corner and having some conviction there. I'm really proud of our team for doing that."
