San Diego State Edges Colorado State 1-0 in Mountain West Opener

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Friday wasn't a bad first outing.
Â
After beating Idaho State 6-0 on September 12th, Colorado State women's soccer was liking the way the team was turning out.
Â
And Friday afternoon's conference opener against San Diego State went according to plan…sort of.
Â
The team had a goal walking into the game. Defensively, they executed it. Offensively, the plan needed some work.
Â
"We gave everything we had," Kristen Noonan said. "We had a few goals for this game, we did those goals, and there are some goals we didn't. We're just focusing on the next game and getting better every day."
Â
The Rams held the Aztecs to one goal, which their opponent snuck in at the 42-minute mark. And despite dropping their first conference game 1-0, the team held their defense down tight.
Â
The Aztecs took 20 shots, six of which were on the goal. Defensively, there was not much to improve upon, but the offensive side told a different story.
Â
"We executed our game plan and just gave up a soft goal," head coach Keeley Hagen said. "We didn't create a ton in the second half, which we talked about after the game. All together we had chances in the first half to get two goals on the board and we just weren't able to put them in, and a good team like San Diego State took advantage of their chance, and now we're sitting there 0-1."
Â
The opportunities to score were there. Noonan took four shots one of which was on the goal. She was joined in her performance by Haylee Blach with two shots, and Gracie Armstrong with two shots and one on the goal.
Â
And while this performance is frustrating, it's only the beginning of the season and the team is working hard to sharpen their skills to take on the rest of conference competition.
Â
"Obviously you can't be happy with a loss," Samantha Studt said. "It's just something we need to build on. We executed strategically, there's just little things we need to work and build on."
Â
The Rams only have Saturday to work on all the small steps to prepare for their game against the New Mexico Lobos on Sunday at afternoon.
Â
Remembering the importance of trusting the process and piecing together small goals is a common theme for the 2021 soccer season, and the Rams know it.
Â
"It's one game at a time," Hagen said. "It's early in our conference and we told our team it doesn't matter who we play, we just have to get better and raise the bar and it was good to see them implement our game plan today and we'll come out with another one on Sunday."
Â
The Rams will host the Lobos on Sunday at 1 p.m. to conclude their opening weekend.
Â
"I'm really proud of our team for working hard and I know we gave it everything we had," Noonan continued. "I'm excited for what's to come for us."
