Last Time Out: Colorado State battled throughout the final round and finished 16th at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, Sept. 13-14. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by University of New Mexico, is being played at UNM Championship Course (Par 72 – 6,317 yards) in Albuquerque, N.M.
Against a field that featured 11 teams represented in the NCAA Regionals last year, the Rams held it together as a team overall and shot a 12-over 300 to finish at 44-over 908. BYU shot the low round of the day with an 8-under 280 and took home the team title at 6-under 858, six shots ahead of runner-up San Jose State at even-par 864. Host New Mexico was third at 3-over 867, with San Diego State (872) and Pepperdine (874) completed the top-five teams.
"On the team front, it was not the outcome we had expected out of this group after our first couple weeks of practice," head coach Laura Cilek said. "The freshman looked a little nervous and seemed to settle into college golf as the tournament went on. This group knows we have work to do when we get back, and we are focused on coming out and competing better in Wisconsin."
Junior Andrea Bergsdottir was the top Ram in a tie for 21st at 3-over 219, following her second even-par 72 of the tournament. It was the sixth top-25 finish in her CSU career. Freshman Lacey Uchida was next in a tie for 43rd at 8-over 224 following a final round 2-over 74. Sophomore Panchalika Arphamongkol was next in a tie for 75th at 15-over 231, while freshman Pemika Arphamongkol placed 86th at 20-over 236. Freshman Romina Villanueva was the final scoring Ram at 25-over 241, finishing 90th. Playing as an individual, sophomore Sofia Torres was 82nd at 17-over 233. Pepperdine's Kaleiya Romero was the medalist after winning a playoff with BYU's Lila Galeai, as both finished at 10-under 206.
"Andrea had a great week," Cilek said. "Tying for 21st in this field was a great start to the season for her. She had worked incredibly hard this summer and over the first few weeks of practice. I can't wait to see her continue to battle at the top of the leaderboard this year.
"Lacey played very solid for her first tournament of her college career," Cilek concluded. "We are proud of the way she came out and competed from the very first tee shot until her last birdie of the tournament."
Â
Fast Five On the 2021-22 Season:
This is the second tournament for the Rams this season.
Junior Andrea Bergsdottir recorded her sixth career top-25 finish at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational with a tie for 21st that included two even-par rounds.
The Rams are the only college team in the country to feature two pairs of sisters on the roster (Panchalika & Pemika Arphamongkol and Thea & Tomine Bjerkelo).
Head coach Laura Cilek is in her fourth year as leader of the Rams.
CSU returns the top five scorers from last year, but all three freshmen have cracked the lineup for the opening tournament through qualifying.
Â
Friendly Honored As All-American Scholar: Freshman Panchalika Arphamongkol was named to the 2020-21 Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholar team as the association announced its annual honors. The criteria to be named an All-American Scholar includes a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50.
Overall, 1,432 women's collegiate golfers were recognized with the prestigious All-American Scholar honor including a combined 38 from the Mountain West.
Â
Fahey Joins Coaching Staff: Erin Fahey joined the CSU women's golf program as assistant coach in June 2021 after spending the last two seasons in the same role at Bowling Green.
Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Fahey was a three-time captain for the Falcons and was named the 2019 Mid-American Conference Sportswoman of the Year. Over the course of her career, Fahey led BGSU to six team tournament titles, which included a title at the 2017 KZoo Classic, where Fahey also claimed the first individual championship of her playing career.
During her playing career for the Falcons, the Austin, Texas native has rewritten the BGSU women's golf record book. Her 76.49 career stroke average is the top in program history by 1.74 strokes, while her 75.48 (2017-18) is the best single-season stroke average in BGSU women's golf history. Additionally, Fahey's 77.17 stroke average in 2015-16 still stands as a freshman record. Fahey was BGSU's leading scorer each year of her career.
A part of back-to-back (17-18 & 18-19) BGSU teams that ranked No. 1 in the country for Division I women's golf in community service hours, Fahey flourished within the BG community and inside the classroom. Fahey – a three-time Academic All-MAC selection and four-time WGCA Academic All-American Scholar – competed on two Bowling Green teams that ranked inside the Top 25 in the nation in Division I team GPA. The 2018-19 squad ranked 23rd in the country for team GPA, while the 2016-17 Falcons ranked No. 15 in the nation.
Fahey received her bachelor's degree from Bowling Green in 2019. An economics major while at BGSU, Fahey earned her MBA (with a specialization in finance) from the university in 2020.
Â
On the World Stage: Two Rams on the current roster are ranked among the top 900 players in the current World Amateur Golf Rankings, as of September 8. The rankings are based on their average performance in selected counting events over the past two calendar years.
