Rams, Bears Play to Tie Again

9/2/2021 10:39:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Colorado State and Northern Colorado End 1-all

GREELEY, Colo. – Just like the exhibition less than a month ago, the Colorado State soccer team played Northern Colorado to a tie although this time it was 1-all Thursday evening at Jackson Stadium.

Going into extra time has been a routine for Colorado State as the Rams are 3-for-3 in the regular season when it comes to reaching extra time and 4-for-5 if you count the two exhibitions. Colorado State moved to 0-1-2 on the season, while UNC went to 1-2-2 overall. In the all-time series, CSU still holds the advantage at 3-2-2 with both ties coming in Greeley.

The Rams struck first in the 36th minute, which also marked the first goal of the season for the green and gold. Graduate captain Baylee Bedard fed fellow senior Kristen Noonan on a header, which represented Noonan's seventh career CSU goal, putting her third on the all-time list along with Hannah Gerdin. Additionally, it went down as Bedard's first-ever assist and points in her career.

At the half, the Rams held the offensive advantage not just on the scoreboard but in shots and shots on goal at eight and four, respectively, compared to UNC's four and three. In addition, CSU had possession for nearly 60% of the opening half and had three corners to the home team's zero.

When play began for the second half, the Rams' offense started to pepper shots at will, hitting the cross bar, flying just over the bar, or going into the mitts of the Bear keeper. Unfortunately, the chances didn't result in any more goals to cushion the lead that ultimately was needed. In the final 10 minutes, the UNC offense was getting more shots and more open space. Ram goalkeeper Amanda Green made a key save in the 81st minute with an up-close shot from the Bears, but five minutes later a header off consecutive corner kicks evened the game at 1-all and soon enough sent the game into overtime.

In overtime one, each team had a pair of chances early, including a try from Gracie Armstrong in the box that the UNC keeper covered up. The last 15 seconds, UNC had a free kick just outside the box on the side that had Ram fans holding their breath, but it sailed high and another overtime was on its way. Early in the second OT period, the Rams dodged a bullet with a UNC shot that went off the post. Armstrong had CSU's last two shots but both drifted high.

Possession time evened out after the half with the margin just 6% apart. CSU overwhelmingly overshot UNC 22-to-12, but the shots on target were eight-to-seven, respectively.

Goals
36' Kristen Noonan – Colorado State (Assist – Baylee Bedard)
The field switched quickly from the Ram defensive end to offensive, giving Colorado State and Gracie Armstrong a lot of real estate to move up the field. After passing midfield, she gave it off to freshman Sophia Pearlman who fired quickly from right outside the box. Although her shot was blocked prior to getting to the keeper, the ricochet went to Baylee Bedard who played it up to Kristen Noonan who reached it at its highest point over a Bear defender and headed it over the Bears' keeper.

85' Lauren Woodhull – Northern Colorado (Assist – McKenna Wilson)
The Bears had back-to-back corner kicks and on the second one Lauren Woodhull got free from any Rams' defenders to get a head on it. The ball went across the goal and over Amanda Green on the back left part of the net.
