Rams Drop Sunday Contest to Kansas State

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The team is ready to turn over a new leaf.
Â
To get there, Colorado State women's soccer is taking the preseason as the necessary baby steps. Sunday's game against Kansas State didn't go according to plan, but the 4-0 defeat doesn't reflect the team's positive outlook on the season.
Â
The first half of the game is when the Wildcats took advantage of errors, leaving them ahead of Colorado State 3-0 at halftime. The Rams picked up their performance after the break and more than doubled their number of shot attempts during the second half.
Â
"I think it's still settling in," forward Caroline Lucas said. "I don't think the scoreboard reflects how we played. In the first half we possessed in our attacking half most of the time. We had two pretty major mistakes and they capitalized on it. They're a good team for doing that, but we need to do that on the other side of the field."
Â
But this is what preseason is for. Limiting the unforced errors, improving defense, and focusing on fundamentals is what head coach Keeley Hagen thinks will make this team successful for conference play.
Â
Defender Sophia Pearlman and forward Gracie Armstrong both took two shots and one on the goal, showing there are opportunities to score, but converting them into goals will come with time.
Â
"You want to get better every game, little by little," Hagen said. "And that's the process we talk about. This is preparing us for the conference. We told the team we're going to sit down and watch the film because they're all going to look back and think this game could've had a much better result than it was."
Â
Kansas State offensively and defensively outperformed the team, but Hagen is still focusing on the fundamentals to get the roster back on track.
Â
A home contest against Idaho State on Sunday will be the next opportunity for the Rams to grow as a team.
Â
"Each day, even if it was a rough one, we still get better at something," Pearlman said. "We all start at a level and every day we just keep pushing and pushing. We just keep progressing and getting better from where we initially started."
