Rams Drop Heartbreaker in Chapel Hill

Colorado State led the match 2-0, but couldn’t secure the victory.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Colorado State took the first two sets of the match at North Carolina, but couldn't secure the victory dropping the last three sets to the Tar Heels. The Rams never led in the third set and controlled the fourth leading 10-6 and 20-19, but couldn't close. In the final frame, CSU had match point at 15-14, but three-consecutive UNC points stole the match. Colorado State dropped their third match of the season, 25-21, 25-19, 16-25, 23-25, 15-17.
 
This is the second five-set match of the season resulting in a loss and have combined for five sets decided by two points, including five of those ending on the wrong end.
 
Colorado State trailed in the first frame, 12-9, but a five-point run gave it the lead – one they wouldn't loss, using another five-point tear to secure the first set win. The Rams trailed in the second game at 12-10, but again used scoring runs, including a four-point streak to finish the set.
 
The third saw the Tar Heel jump out to an 8-1 lead and never looked back. Carolina used a five-point run to extend its lead to 18-8 before finishing the set to put the match at 2-1. In the fourth, Colorado State made a six-point run to lead 10-6, but the Heels chipped away to tie the set at 11-11. From there, both teams traded points and were tied at 23-23 before UNC took the last two points to even the match.
 
In the final frame, North Carolina led at 10-7 before the Rams clawed their way back to grab match point at 14-13 after a 3-0 run. Both teams exchanged points before the Tar Heels took the match on a 3-0 run.
 
Four different Rams reached double-figure kills, led by Kennedy Stanford with 13, followed by Annie Sullivan (11) and Jacqi Van Liefde and Karina Leber (10). Colorado State finished hitting .231 for the match, with a .348 mark in the final frame. Alexa Roumeliotis led the back row with 12 digs, followed closely by Brooke Hudson with 11. Roumeliotis also had three of CSU's seven aces. Ciera Pritchard dished out 43 assists and added two blocks. Leber paced the Rams at the net with four blocks.
 
Colorado State will finish its road trip playing at NC State Saturday night at 5 p.m., MT on the ACC Network. The Rams will return home next weekend and host a trio of teams Moby Arena.
