Guard dishes out school-record 17 assists in 88-72 win at Utah State
LOGAN, Utah. – With the intention of snapping a two-game Mountain West skid, point guard McKenna Hofschild was willing to help out any way she could.
Â
Hofschild set a school record with 17 assists in the game as the Rams took down Utah State on the road, 88-72 on Wednesday night. CSU improved to 12-4 overall, 3-3 in conference play. Utah State slid to 5-12, 0-7.
Â
Colorado State shot 51 percent from the field and scored at least 21 points in each quarter, with the team finishing with a season-best 26 assists. Hofschild did the brunt of the work, her final tally the second most in Mountain West history and second best in the nation this season. She also contributed eight rebounds and seven points.
Â
"My teammates did a really good job. They got to their spots and got open for me," Hofschild said. "So it was just a matter of me trying to take my time, be patient and finding them."
Â
Her accommodations led to five different Rams in double figures, paced by 18 from Karly Murphy, who shot 9-of-12 from the field and collected eight rebounds. Petra Farkas poured in a career-best 17 points, and Kendyll Kinzer and Upe Atosu each had 16. Kinzer added 11 rebounds, her first double-double of the season.
Â
The last Ram in double digits was Sydney Mech, who returned to the lineup after missing the past eight games. In just nine minutes of play, she hit all three of her 3-point attempts, finishing with 11 points.
Â
The Rams jumped out to a 21-10 lead after one and never looked back, making 14-of-31 3-pointers on the night, hitting 34-of-67 from the floor overall.
Â
"We needed that good start," CSU coach Ryun William said. "We got a lot of stops early on, we got out and ran a lot early. We just had some good individual performances there in the first half as far as shot making, but it started because we guarded."
Â
Colorado State will remain on the road, traveling to Boise State for a Saturday game (2 p.m.). The two teams met earlier in the year at Moby Arena, with the Rams claiming an 81-77 victory in their Mountain West opener.
