Rams Drop Fourth Quarter Battle at Boise

1/22/2022 4:28:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Broncos Hold Off Colorado State in Final Quarter for 69-64 Win

BOISE, ID – Coming down to the wire but not ending in Colorado State's favor, the Rams fell to Boise State 69-64 Saturday afternoon at ExtraMile Arena.

Seven straight points from the Rams with just under three minutes to go in regulation bolted CSU to a four-point lead at 63-59, but like most of the game the other team responded with a rhymical run themselves. Boise State finished on a 10-1 with five points coming from the free-throw line. The game altering situation occurred with about 41 seconds left as the Broncos grabbed three offensive rebounds that ended with a bucket and a foul, giving way to a three-point play and the one-point lead. In CSU's next offensive possession, Boise's blindside defense earned a steal from a posting up Karly Murphy and from there the Broncos sealed it at the line.

Colorado State dropped to 12-5 overall and 3-4 in the Mountain West, while the Broncos improved to 7-11 and 3-4 in conference play. The result makes the series a split for 2021-22 since the Rams defeated Boise State in the conference opener on Dec. 28th in Moby Arena.

"That was two teams really battling out there," head coach Ryun Williams said. "We got from Boise what we thought we would get, which is a lot of resistance in the rematch game. You're going to get a different attitude and mentality. At times, we didn't handle it well. They disrupted us just enough times to get us out of rhythm. We need to be more together when we face adversity like that and grow our leadership. We certainly rallied a few times and showed fight late which we are proud of, but mistakes along the way through the 40 minutes came back to bite us. I credit our student-athletes for getting in a position to take a road win, but we certainly wish we could have finished it."

The stat book showed an even contest with field goal percentage and the battle at the line; however the main differences were on the glass and at the 3-point line. Boise shot 58% from distance, making 7 for 12, while CSU was just 29% with a clip of 6-of-21. Rebounding went the Broncos' favor by a tone of 48 to 30 including 15 offensive rebounds that led to 18 second chance points.

At the half, the game was knotted up at 35-all after CSU made its last five shots in the second quarter. The third quarter was mostly out of sorts for both teams, but the Broncos scored the last bucket to head into the fourth with a 50-47 lead. Two quick 3s put BS up by nine – the largest lead of the game – in the fourth, but the Rams answered. An offensive rebound by McKenna Hofschild led to a three from Upe Atosu that sparked a 9-0 run to tie the game at 56-all. Shortly there after is when CSU took the lead on a Petra Farkas trey, which prompted a Boise State timeout. After the break, the Broncos secured the win with that 10-1 scoring run.

Atosu led all CSU scoring with 16 points with Murphy and Hofschild adding 14 and 11, respectively. Kendyll Kinzer grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds along with two blocks and two steals.

The Rams will continue their road trip Monday at Fresno State with a 7 p.m. MT tip inside the Save Mart Center.
