Rams Fall 73-63 to Aztecs
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Rams flirted with a fourth quarter comeback but couldn't close the deal, leading to a 73-63 loss to San Diego State Monday evening at the Viejas Arena.
Â
Colorado State trailed by as many as 22 points in the third quarter and 18 by the end of it but crawled back into it in the final frame on 71.4% shooting and a 7-0 run to start. The Rams proceeded to chip away gradually and moved under a double-digit deficit with two minutes to go. However, the Aztecs were able to stave off the comeback as they shot an efficient 40% from the floor and made all their free throws. The loss marked the first for CSU since Nov. 28th, going to 10-2 overall and 1-1 in Mountain West play. SDSU improved to 7-7 overall and 1-2 in conference action.
Â
"We settled for some tough shots on the perimeter, which I wish we could have back and put the ball in different spots," head coach Ryun Williams said. "Our lack of depth hurt us tonight certainly down low. If we had the likes of Cali Clark and Sydney Mech it would have been different matchup-wise, but we didn't and that was the case tonight. I like how we battled as the game progressed despite being down 20 at one point. Our players kept fighting, but we dug ourselves too big of a hole to start."
Â
Leading the team in scoring, McKenna Hofschild finished with 22 points along with eight assists and five rebounds. Karly Murphy notched her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Kendyll Kinzer chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds. For the other side, SDSU's Asia Avinger controlled the tempo of the Aztecs, scoring a game-high 24 points with seven assists.
Â
Prior to the fourth quarter in which the Rams outscored the Aztecs 26-18, SDSU built momentum with two lopsided quarters in the middle of the contest. First, Avinger stroked a buzzer-beater to conclude the first quarter and give the Aztecs a 14-13 lead. While the Rams went 0-fer from three and shot 20% overall in the second quarter, the Aztecs took a 33-22 lead into the break on another buzzer beater to rub it in. The third was more of the same with SDSU outscoring CSU 22-15. Petra Farkas connected on a trey this time to close the quarter, which ignited the Rams on a 10-0 run including the first seven of the fourth. Ultimately though down the stretch, the Aztecs were able to match buckets with the Rams to seal the win.
Â
In all, CSU shot 36.9% compared to SDSU's 41.2% and the Aztecs took care of the ball better with eight turnovers to the Rams' 11. SDSU cashed in on those takeaways with 18 points from them as well. Another stark difference was points from the bench which was 17-0 in favor of the home team.
Â
The Rams will return home for a five-day break until they play San Jose State on Sunday at 12 p.m. inside Moby Arena.
