Rams Remain Undefeated in the Mountain West with Win Over Lobos

Colorado State takes down New Mexico in four sets

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Colorado State volleyball team is now 4-0 in the Mountain West conference and one of only two unbeaten teams thus far in conference play after the Rams traveled to Albuquerque Saturday afternoon and left with another win on their resume beating New Mexico, 3-1.

After the Lobos took Wyoming to five sets in another conference matchup Thursday night, the Rams knew that New Mexico was going to be a tough opponent, especially on its home court. The Rams playing in only their fourth true road game of the season needed to serve the ball more aggressively and be able to hit around the strong New Mexico block.

This is exactly what they did on their road to victory.

From a serving side of the ball, the Rams totaled six service aces, not including the out-of-system over passes that Colorado State was able to force from the service line. Junior Ruby Kayser led the Rams in serving with three aces on the day.

"We really stepped up our serving today," Head Coach Tom Hilbert said after the match. "I think Ruby and a few other players had some great service runs, especially in the first two sets, which is something you have to do well when you're on the road."

Complimenting the attack from behind the service line, hitting around the Lobo block was something that both middle blockers excelled in during this matchup. Juniors Naeemah Weathers and Karina Leber both let the way for the Rams with 13 kills, hitting a .524 and .429 respectively. On top of combating the Lobos' block on offense, Colorado State also turned up the heat on defense, finishing with 11 total blocks. Weathers assisted on six of those blocks with Leber assisting on three.

The Rams took both of the two opening sets by scores of 25-23 and 26-24, but with New Mexico knocking on the doorstep of each one, they inevitably took the third set, 25-19, to make it a 2-1 match in favor of the Rams. Unwilling to relinquish momentum on the road, the Rams battled back to take the third set and the match, 25-18.

Other top performers for Colorado State included Kennedy Stanford who notched her fourth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs. Annie Sullivan and Malaya Jones also added eight kills to the win.

Setter Ciera Pritchard finished with 46 assists while Libero Kate Yoshimoto ended with 17 digs.

The Rams will return home to continue conference play next Thursday against Nevada and then Saturday against the last unbeaten team in the Mountain West, San Jose State.
