CSU women’s golf earned its first team title and individual medalists since 2018

KAPOLEI, Hawaii – Start fast, finish strong. Colorado State women's golf did just that Wednesday to run away with the Rainbow Wahine team title by 14 strokes. The Rams matched their opening round score with a 6-under, 282 over the final 18 to pull away from the competition. They finished the invite with a 54-hole score of 7-under, 857.

The team trophy wasn't the only piece of hardware Colorado State secured to bring home with them. Sofia Torres earned co-medalists with Gonzaga's Cassie Kim. The two tied with a total of 211, 5-under over the three rounds.

It is Torres' first career medalist and CSU's first since Ellen Secor in 2018. The team title is also the first since 2018, both happening at the Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate.

"I'm just so proud of this group. They have worked hard all fall and are a close-knit team," Coach Laura Cilek. "Special things happen when you are playing for each other and pushing each other. They are so fun to be around and to see them come out and win by fourteen strokes was awesome. The conditions this week were tough with wind gusts up to 20 miles per hour. We trusted our games and embraced the wind. It is just the beginning for this crew! I would be remised to not mention the importance of assistant coach Brady Campbell. He has been a great addition to our coaching staff and is a large part of this win as well."

Scoring was low across the field early on Wednesday. Colorado State accumulated six birdies combined over the first five holes to keep their eight-stroke lead, but Gonzaga made a charge in the middle of the round. The Rams saw their lead cut in half entering the home stretch and responded to the challenge.

Once again, CSU found a flurry of birdies to close the tournament with a bang and leave no doubt. One of those birdies down the home stretch came from Torres who sank her birdie putt on her final hole of the day the par five first. That putt helped her post a career-best tying 69 for the second time in three days and meant she would be co-medalist.

The Rams had four golfers earn top 10 finishes with Andrea Bergsdottir, Panchalika Arphamongkol and Pemika Arphamongkol joining Torres. Bergsdottir was a stroke behind Torres with a 4-under, 212 including an even-par 72 Wednesday. She tied for third. The Arphamongkol sisters tied for eighth at 2-over, 218. Panchalika shot a 2-under, 70 in the final round and Pemika was 1-under.

Colorado State led the field with 46 birdies and was second with 171 pars. Not taking a big score was important for the Rams too who led the field in scoring on both par 3s and par 4s. Over the final two rounds they recorded just two double bogeys or worse.

The win propels CSU into the winter break. Colorado State does not return to competition until February 6-7 at the FAU Paradise Invitational.
