Rams Suffer Largest Defeat of Season

Senior day celebrations did not end as hoped
The checkered flag has waved on the season. The field is empty, equipment taken in, and players heading home. However, the work is far from done for Colorado State.
In their final game of the season, the Rams fell to cross-state rival Wyoming 4-0. It is the worst loss of the season for Keeley Hagen's side, and an unfortunate way for eight seniors to depart CSU's program.
While the Rams did have some shots from seniors Kaitlyn Abrams and Sarah Hogenkamp to start, Wyoming was a step ahead. They understood coming in that not only was Colorado State a rival school, but their own positioning as they tried to remain in the hunt for the top spot in the Mountain West Tournament. It led them on to two goals just separated by 70 seconds to grab the lead less than 20 minutes into the match.
It kept goalkeeper Maddie Ogden busy, who was called into action multiple times. This included on the offensive side, as she sent several long balls into the Cowgirls box from free kicks, none of which tested the opposing netminder.
While the Rams looked to reset at the start of the second half, it would be Wyoming jumping out of the gates with a quick goal that all but put the game away. Hogenkamp continued to do her best up front, sending in a couple of crosses but finding no one on the receiving end of them. Â
Liv Layton tried her best as well, sending some passes to the aforementioned Hogenkamp and sending in a cross that again went missing herself. However, it did not help on the defensive side as the Cowgirls' fourth and final goal was a freak one. Taylor Bee cleared it off an attacker which then bounced over Ogden's head into the net.
It about summed up the game – and the year – for the CSU Women's Soccer team. Things simply did not go their way: they scored 15 goals, gave up 23 goals, and forced their goalkeepers to save 83 shots. While Layton scored a season-high six goals, it did not help the Rams overcome their offensive struggles from last season either. It fell four short of the mark and gave up one more goal than last season as well.
This will be a season to forget for Colorado State, while also looking to enter a new era. They'll be moving on from eight seniors, relying on younger players, all while doing it in a new stadium. While familiar names like Bee, Layton, Hogenkamp, Abrams, Evers, Lucas, Gipson, and Hall will be gone, new faces will come along and fill in the gaps.Â
We've seen some names already coming in for appearances. Katy Coffin, Mia Massey, Lauren Wheeler, and Ali Yoshida have seen significant time on the field. Those numbers will only increase with seniors departing from the team and having their quality excel during offseason training.
After falling short of their goals this season, the bright lights of new stadium and night games with a revamped squad are calling. Now is the time for the Rams to reset, work hard over the offseason, and prepare to do it all again in 10 months' time.Â
