A total team effort leads CSU over Saint Mary’s
MORAGA, Calif. – Head coach Niko Medved and the Colorado State men's basketball team break every huddle with "Team Together", that's exactly what tonight's win at Saint Mary's was. Down some key players due to injury, the Rams gritted out a 62-60 win over the Gales.
Neither team led by more than five at any point of the game leading to 13 times and 11 lead changes.
Colorado State stayed together through the ebbs and flows of the game as senior guard Isaiah Stevens led the charge on offense and it was a complete effort on the defensive end.
Stevens gave CSU the lead with a pair of free throws at 61-59 with 1:50 left and the Rams held on after that. Colorado State held the Gales to just one shot attempt, which was blocked, and forced three turnovers over the final 1:50 to earn the win.
The final 30 seconds of the game featured three combined turnovers, the last being the costliest for SMC with one second left.
CSU shot 55.8% from the field against one of the best defenses in the nation. Stevens led the team with 23 points and five assists. On the other end of the floor, Colorado State held Saint Mary's to 40.4% shooting.
Game Notes
- Isaiah Stevens topped 1,400 points in his career with his 23 points on Sunday night. He also is now in the top 10 for made 3s in a career.
- The win is the 30th non-conference win in the past four seasons for CSU.
- The series now stands at 4-2 in favor of the Rams. The win is the first time a team won back-to-back games in the series
- John Tonje was the only other Ram in double figures with 17 points to go with three rebounds.
What's Ahead
Colorado State closes out the non-conference season by participating in the Jerry Colangilo Classic in Phoenix on Wednesday. The Rams with face their second USC of the season, this time Southern California at 9 pm inside the Footprint Center.
