CSU Earns Split In Season Series With 61-55 Win Over Wyoming

2/23/2022 10:29:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Junior guard David Roddy posted 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Rams to their 22nd win of the year.

FORT COLLINS, Colo.  –  Returning home for the Mountain West's most-played rivalry, Colorado State made the plays in the final minutes to secure a 61-55 win over visiting Wyoming Wednesday night in Moby Arena. In splitting this year's series, the Rams improved to 22-4 overall and 12-4 in the Mountain West, while the Cowboys fell to 22-5 and 11-3 for the conference.

Colorado State raced out to an early 19-7 lead, but Wyoming rallied and eventually took a 27-25 lead with two minutes to play in the opening half. The Rams closed the half on a 6-0 spurt and led 31-27 at the break. The second half continued that tight battle as CSU never trailed but also never led by more than six in the final 20 minutes. With the game at 54-53 with 3:42 to go, CSU relied on a layup by junior forward David Roddy, a triple from graduate guard Chandler Jacobs and a pair of free throws from junior guard Isaiah Stevens, along with four key stops of the Cowboys in the closing possessions, to earn the six-point victory.

In a defensive battle between two of the league's top offensive teams, Colorado State finished the game hitting just 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the floor and 33.3 percent (9-of-24) from the arc. Wyoming was limited to just 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the field and 35.5 percent (11-of-31) on threes. Wyoming took a slim margin on the boards, 36-33. CSU was 10-of-11 at the charity stripe while the Cowboys hit all six of their attempts. CSU did outscore the visitors 12-2 on the fast break.

CSU was led by Roddy with his sixth double-double of the year with 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Jacobs came off the bench with a season-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including four triples. Stevens also finished with 10 points and six assists in the game. Wyoming was led by Drake Jeffries with 22 points, while Graham Ike had eight points and 13 rebounds.

STAT OF THE GAME
• CSU was stalwart on defense, holding the league's top scoring duo of Ike and Hunter Maldonado to a combined 12 points (Ike's first single-digit game of the year) and forcing nine of the 11 Wyoming turnovers from the duo.

NOTES
• In the most-contested rivalry in the Mountain West, Wyoming holds a 138-99 advantage overall, including 118-72 in conference, but just 56-54 in Fort Collins.
• CSU has won nine of the last 13 meetings overall (6 of the last 8).
• The 55 points were a season low for Wyoming and the fifth time this year that CSU has held an opponent to 55 points or less
• Roddy's double-double was the 20th of his CSU career tying him with Alan Cunningham (1976-78) and Gary Rhoades (1970-73)             for eighth all time.
• CSU is now 11-1 in games decided by 10 or less this season.
• The 22 wins is the second most head coach Niko Medved has had in his nine seasons as a head coach.
• Jacobs has posted two of his top games this year in the last four games, also having a then season-high 16 at Boise State Feb. 13. He now has seven games in double figures this year for the Rams (CSU is 7-0 in those games).
