Rams head to California for duals against San Jose State, No. 66 Fresno State

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Having built experience and a resume through the early winter months, Colorado State's women's tennis team is set to embark on Mountain West play this week with a pair of matches in Fresno, Calif.

The Rams are 6-5 on the season, with each dual loss coming to a team currently ranked by the ITA. They spent the past weekend in California, dropping matches to No. 17 Loyola Marymount and No. 67 Cal State Fullerton, playing well enough that junior Radka Buzkova earned Mountain West Player of the Week honors, the first for the program since 2018.

"We have had some great matches leading into conference and preparing us for the regular season," head coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "Some individuals have really stepped up and are playing some great tennis."

The team starts with a Saturday match against San Jose State (10 a.m.), then faces the No. 66 Bulldogs on Sunday (12 p.m.). The Spartans are 3-6 on the year; the Bulldogs 10-3. There are live stats for the Fresno State match.

Buzkova has been on roll as of late in singles, winning her past eight matches. She currently leads the team with a 17-4 mark, but a trio of her teammates have already surpassed 10 wins on the year. Somer Dalla-Bona (who has won five in a row) is 14-9, while Sarka Richterova (12-10) and Lucia Natal (12-2) have also reached 10 wins.

Buzkova and doubles partner Matea Mihaljevic are 20-4 on the season, with the tandem of Dalla-Bona and Richterova 12-8.

In the fall, Colorado State had periodic glimpses of what the conference will look like but will become fully emersed with a pair of conference matches each of the next six weeks, the first five on the road.

"We to a chance to experience the standard of play within the Mountain West in the fall," Tran said. "There are some really strong teams this year, all in contention. We have had some thrillers with many of the conference schools, so it just makes this time of year that much more exciting.

"SJSU and Fresno State have both been in good form recently. They've had a little more practice outdoors than us, but our trip to California last week has helped us in preparation for this weekend. We are in good shape and can't wait to get started."
