Rams Clip Spartans to Win Conference Opener
3/26/2022 4:01:00 PM | Women's Tennis
FRESNO, Calif. – Getting off on the right foot is always preferable, it had just been a while for Colorado State's women's tennis program.
Â
For the first time since 2010 – a string of 10 tries – Colorado State's women's tennis team started Mountain West play on the right side of the ledger, clipping San Jose State 4-3 on Saturday in Fresno. The Rams beat New Mexico 4-3 in the 2010 conference opener.
Â
Colorado State is now 7-5 this spring.
Â
"Winning a conference opener gives the team a huge confidence boost heading into our upcoming matches, but especially for tomorrow's matchup," CSU head coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "Winning the first one is a great boost, but also coming away with a gritty 4-3 win without one of our key players is even bigger."
Â
Freshman Sarah Weekley clinched the victory for Colorado State with her 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory in the fifth spot. She has a penchant for playing long matches, with her past four complete matches all going three sets – with two others going unfinished in the third. She is now 2-2 on the season in three-set matches, winning two in succession.
Â
She is now 4-2 on the season after joining the team at semester. She has bounced around in the final two positions in the spring and is now 3-1 at the fifth spot.
Â
"Sarah has been doing a great job at her spot and has come away with some key wins for us," Tran said. "It's a privilege to be in a match-clinching position, but particularly as a freshman. You can't replicate those high-pressure moments, and to be gaining these experience so young will only help her as she develops."
Â
Colorado State earned the doubles point in short order as the No. 1 team of Radka Buzkova and Matea Mihaljevic dropped just one game, the No. 2 set of Somer Dalla-Bona and Sarka Richterova winning six in a row. It was the 21st doubles win of the year for both Buzkova and Mihaljevic, ranking them tied for fourth all time with four others.
Â
Buzkova, the reigning player of the week in the Mountain West, did not play singles. Dalla-Bona and Lucia Natal picked up singles victories to set up the dramatics, with Dalla-Bona winning 6-2, 6-0 in the second spot, natal 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4.
Â
The Rams finish the opening weekend of Mountain West play with Sunday's match against the host Fresno State Bulldogs, ranked No. 66.
