Team splits four matches on the first day
AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Armed with a completely new set of doubles pairings, Colorado State hit the court competitively for the first time this season, splitting four doubles matches on the day as the Bedford Cup opened at the Air Force Academy on Thursday.

The Rams picked up a win in the Alpha draw from Emily Dush and Sarka Richterova, who dropped Idaho's Annabel Davis and Lena Beckx 8-4. In the Bravo draw, Ky Ecton and Viktoryia Zhadzinkskaya topped Jessica Hill and Li Yang Ping An of Weber State 8-1.

"The first day is usually the toughest to play through some nerves, but it was great to see good energy with our doubles teams and they competed well," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said.

Radka Buzkova and Zara Lennon dropped an Alpha-draw match in a tiebreak, 7-6 (5) to Utah State's Annaliese County and Monique Burton; Luana Avelar and Sarah Weekley fell in the Bravo draw, 8-4, to Dylan Lolofie and Sicely Ferreira of Weber State.

Much of what Tran needed to see on the day was how the pairings worked well together and what other possible combinations may be possible down the road.

"We are still trying out our pairings and working on communication," she said. "The good thing is we have many options. Right now, we are looking to learn from each match and use each one to improve and keep reminding ourselves of the big picture."

Friday's play will be limited to singles matches, beginning at 9 a.m. Buzkova and Lennon will be in the Alpha draw; Dush and Richterova in the Bravo draw; Avelar and Ecton in the Charlie draw; and Weekley and Zhadzinskaya in the Delta draw. The final two days of the tournament will include both singles and doubles play.
