Youngest new Rams both post a trio of victories on the second day

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The second day of the season was a full slate as Colorado State competed in both doubles and singles at the Bedford Cup, and two of the newest and youngest members of the team came away with a perfect showing at the air Force Academy.

Freshman Luana Avelar won both of her singles matches in the Charlie draw, with Viktoryia Zhadzinkskaya doing the same in the Delta bracket. Both earlier in the day posted wins in the lone round of doubles, with the Zhadzinskaya-Ky Ecton tandem reaching the semifinals of the Bravo draw.

For both, this tournament represents their first collegiate action at the Division I level, and neither of them looked fazed.

"We had a great showing from the Rams today," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "Vika played with so much confidence and dominated her matches. Lu faced a couple tough opponents and showed a lot of fight throughout her matches. It was great for her to get her first three collegiate wins."

Avelar opened with  6-2, 5-7, 6-1 win over Dylan Lolofie of Weber State in the Charlie bracket, then came back with a 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5) marathon with Lola O'Lideadha of Idaho State. Zhadzinskaya beat Dora Kurdi of New Mexico State 6-0, 6-3 to start her day, then capped it with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sidnee Lavatai of Utah State in the Delta draw.

Avelar replaced Zara Lennon (who had to withdraw) to team with Radka Buzkova to post an 8-2 win over Madison Smith and Tina Li of BYU, 8-2 in the Alpha consolation bracket, while BYU's Yujia Huang and Emmie Moore beat Emily Dush and Sarka Richterova 8-3 to advance in the championship bracket. In the Bravo bracket, Ky Ecton and Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya advanced on the championship side with an 8-2 victory over Zeynep Naz Ozturk and Indya Nespor of Utah State; on the other side, CSU withdrew with Sarah Weekley no longer with a partner.

"Sarah competed in her first fall competition and won both matches in straight sets today with really solid play," Tran said. "The whole team competed hard with great attitudes. I'm proud of them, and I'm looking forward to another day."

Weekley took advantage of her chances on the singles courts, posting a pair of wins – 7-5, 7-5 over Selein Sepken of Idaho in the first round, followed by a 6-4, 6-3 decision in the second over Kenadee Semenik of Weber State as Colorado State went 11-3 in singles matches.

Buzkova, playing in the Alpha bracket, posted a pair of straight-sets victories. She started with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Idaho's Annabel Davis, then came back with a 6-1, 6-4 decision against Ana Morett of Weber State. In the Bravo draw, Dush started with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win against Yija Jiao of BYU, followed by a 6-0, 6-2 win over Monique Burton of Utah State. In the same draw, Richterova dropped a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 decision to Abby Cotuna of Air Force, then fell 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 to Nicole Discenza of Boise State.

The tournament continues tomorrow with a continuation of play in both singles and doubles, beginning at 9 a.m.
