Colorado State starts Mountain West play with two on the road
FORT COLLINS, Colo.- Colorado State hits the road this week for two matches against Mountain West rivals, New Mexico (2-2-3) and San Diego State (2-2-4). Thursday's match with the Aztecs is the opener for conference play for the Rams.
ÂThe Rams have had a steady start to the 2022 campaign with a 3-3-2 record through the first five weeks. Colorado State won three of its first four matches to start the season and have since struggled to find the win column. The hot start quickly fizzled as the Rams finished non-conference play with two losses in between two scoreless draws.Â
ÂIn head coach Keeley Hagen's second season, the Rams saw improvement in their non-conference schedule, notching two more wins than in 2021.Â
Â"Our non conference season tested us in many ways. We told our team it's a new season," said Hagen, "we are excited to move forward to see how we've grown over the last nine games in our consistency and execution."
ÂWith conference play beginning, Colorado State looks to get its offense going again. Early on, the Rams were scoring from all over the pitch, getting scoring from six different players in the first four matches. Since then they have scored one goal while being shutout in three of their final four non-conference matches. The lack of scoring has not been due to a lack of trying as Colorado State is averaging nine shots per match.Â
ÂDefensively the Rams have allowed one goal or fewer in five of their eight matches. The goalkeeping for the Rams has been the most consistent part of their 2022 season. Emilie Gavillett started the first seven matches for the Rams before leaving the net open for redshirt Junior Maddie Ogden for the first half on Sunday. Gavillet found her 25th save of the season in the final 45 minutes in relief for Ogden who stopped the only first half attempt for the Roos.Â
ÂColorado State kicks off against San Diego State at 8 p.m, on Thursday night before heading into Albuquerque for a matchup with the Lobos on Sunday at 12 p.m.
