Colorado State takes Bears to extra points in three-set match
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State volleyball team finished its first road match with a 3-0 loss, but the Rams put up a strong fight against the No. 15 team in the country falling just short to Baylor in the first set, 25-23, and taking the Bears to extra points in the third set, 30-28.
Â
From the jump, the Rams took early leads in all three sets. A serving run from Redshirt Freshman Kate Yoshimoto set up the Rams well in the first set with an early 7-3 lead. As the Bears tried to get more into rhythm, two kills and a service ace from Karina Leber kept the Rams in front. However, a late run from Baylor gave the opening set to the home team in Waco.
Â
After dropping the second set, 25-19, the Rams were knocking on the door of a set win and hoping to steal one from the ranked Bears before the night was over. In set three, they almost did.
Â
Through a tight third set, Baylor was able to rally to a 20-16 lead, but a service ace by Junior Ruby Kayser and a sneaky set over the net by fifth-year setter Ciera Pritchard for a kill left the game tied up at 22 all. Trading points back-and-forth, the Rams only had set point once while fending off three match points for the Bears before Baylor took the set and the match with a final set score of 30-28.
Â
After the loss, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said, "Both sets one and three were winnable for us. We had opportunities to win both and that's what we learned from this. We have to look at those situations and be able to be a little bit more aggressive and I think we could be up 2-1 on them. We're not far off. We just have to look at it and learn from it and grow."
Â
Statistical leaders for Colorado State included Annie Sullivan leading the way with 10 kills on 24 attempts with Leber following close behind, hitting a .462 kill percentage with six kills. Pritchard totaled 20 assists while Yoshimoto rallied 11 digs from the back row.
Â
The Rams are back in action tomorrow as they face off against Evansville at 9 a.m. MST and Arizona State at 7 p.m. MST.
