Rams Set to Tackle Weekend Invitational

Five-team meet covers two days at AFA
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – What was originally scheduled as a series of dual meets has now been changed into the Air Force Invitational. Which also alters the approach for Colorado State women's swimming and diving coach Christopher Woodard.
Â
His team will face off with the host Falcons, as well as Colorado Mesa, BYU and Seattle over Friday and Saturday. The meet, which will also have a men's competition, begins at 5 p.m. the first day, 11 a.m. on Saturday. With a slew of action in the lanes, the meet will also present the first chance for the Rams' divers to compete on the platform in addition to the two springboards.
Â
With the structure change, Woodard will use the two sessions to start making some decision for the upcoming Mountain West Championships in terms of how relays are set up and what third events some of his swimmers may tackle.
Â
"Being that it's not a head-to-head dual meet, we still want to go out and perform our best, but it does allow us some latitude not worrying about the win-loss ledger to get kids third events they may not typically swim but they will swim at conference," Woodard said. "It's probably a nice last tune up for some of that. We may play around with some of our combinations in terms of relays to get a greater sense of what our depth looks like.
Â
"There's a lot of evaluation for third events and personnel changes in relays and overall finetuning."
Â
For some of the roster, third events are fairly set, but this weekend allows them to explore other opportunities which could affect how Woodard attempts to maximize point production when he has to set his conference roster on Feb. 8. Others still need to cement what their third best event is actually.
Â
With a season full of results, there are some slim margins of separation between Rams to determine who is swimming which legs on the five relays which will be competed. Finding some versatility can strengthen some of those quads, so while the competition may not seem the same without a dual format, Woodard hopes his swimmers understand there is internal battles remaining for those coveted spots.
Â
"I think there are a couple of relays where maybe that third or fourth leg might be between two or three people," Woodard said. "Getting last-minute evaluations is pretty key. They're all going to have their pros and cons and assets and weaknesses. Ultimately, it's our decision, but I like when they come in, 'have you thought about this?' That's good. I want them self-evaluating. Friday, we made sure coming out of this meet that will be our determination of what our scoring squad is, and we will probably take one extra athlete just in case. Once that team is listed, I'm not changing it."
