Five race wins highlight first session at Air Force
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Right out of the blocks, the pace was set.
Â
Colorado State's women's swimming and diving team won the 400-yard medley relay to start the two-day Air Force Winter Invite and followed up with a trio of individual wins and another relay to walk off deck with first-day victory in the five-team affair.
Â
While the meet covers two days, each is being scored on its own, with the Rams winning Friday with 519.5 points, just ahead of the host Falcons at 511.5.
Â
The Rams' opening quad of Lucy Matheson, Katie McClelland, Amanda Hoffman and Megan Hager won the event by more than 2 seconds (3:49.66), then kept piling up the points with the top 16 scoring in the meet's first 11 events, including two sessions on the diving board.
Â
Matheson would come back later to lead a 1-2 finish in the 200 butterfly, her 2:05.77 ahead of teammate Hannah Sykes (2:10.05). Freshman Lexie Trietley posted her normal output of winning both the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 23.25 and 51.44 at the 7.200-foot elevation natatorium. The day closed with CSU winning the 200 free relay, comprised of Anika Johnson, Azalea Shepherd, Hager and Trietley.
Â
"We still have some people vying for different relay legs, but changing the lineups gives us a chance to evaluate the best partners for exchanges," CSU head coach Christopher Woodard said. "That's an area where we can keep working."
Â
Woodard said he'd use the meet to explore third-event possibilities for the upcoming Mountain West Championships in Houston, and his team produced even competing in off events. Most of the Rams' points came from top-eight finishes. The team added three more behind Trietley in the 100 free, with three placing in the upper half in the 50 free, 200 individual medley and on the 3-meter springboard.
Â
Hager, Matheson, Shepherd, Erin Dawson and Caroline Perry all had a pair of top-eight results on the day. Johnson, Delaney Engel, Maya White and Ashlyn Hembree all scored in a pair of races. All three divers, Jessica Albanna, Braeden Shaffer and Maggie Di Scipio finished in the top nine on both boards.
Â
"The races in off events were good, especially Lucy's 100 free," he said. "The kids just displayed a willingness to get outside their comfort zone. "
Â
Overall, the Rams had 37 scoring results, 23 in the top eight. Saturday's session, which begins at 11 a.m., features a live stream of the nine events, including the debut of platform diving for the Rams.
