Buzkova looking to crack another program list

FORT COLLINS – As the fall portion of the schedule extends, so do the challenges.

Colorado State's women's tennis team heads to Salt Lake City this week to play in the ITA Mountain Regionals. The five-day event will be hosted by Utah as play begins Wednesday and extends through Sunday's championship matches.

All eight Rams will be in the draw in both singles and doubles.

"We always look forward to ITA Regionals because we get a good look at all the mountain region teams at one site who we may not see in the previous tournaments," CSU head coach Mai-Ly  Tran said. "It's also an opportunity to qualify for the ITA Fall Nationals.  That has given our team extra motivation to get into that tournament with the top players in the country."

Two years ago, Colorado State owned the doubles final, advancing to the title match on both sides of the bracket. Champions automatically advance to Fall Nationals, which Radka Buzkova and her partner did at the time. But the runner-up team, which included Sarka Richterova, earned an at-large bid to the tournament.

This time around, Buzkova heads to the event needing one more victory in doubles to crack the program's career top-10 list for wins. She currently sits at 46 having won seven matches this season with two different partners; the program record is 72. At the ITA All-American Championships, she and current partner Victoria Erechtchenko made the quarterfinals of two draws in going 4-2 overall. Buzkova is also three wins shy of the career top 10 in singles, currently with 53.

Tran feels her team has improved each time out in competition, a trend she expects will continue this week and in the final fall tournament scheduled, the San Diego State Fall Classic No. 2 Nov. 3-5.

"I like how our team has progressed throughout this fall.  We've been intentional with what we want to improve on," she said. "We're halfway through our fall season and we are getting better each day and using these tournaments to see what else we need to work on.  We know that these matches ultimately prepare us for the spring season, and at the end of the day we love any day we get a chance to compete."
