Duo reaches quarters in ITA qualifying doubles draw
CARY, N.C. – If you get a second chance, make the most of the opportunity.
Â
Which is exactly what the Colorado State pairing of Radka Buzkova and Victoria Erechtchenko did Monday at the ITA All-American Championships, winning a pair of matches to reach the round of 16 of the qualifying draw in doubles.
Â
"I do think it's impressive they are in the final of the qualification at the All-American event," CSU assistant coach Pavel Zinchenko said. "However, (head coach) Mai-Ly (Tran) and I both knew how good they are, and we knew they are capable of being at this stage of the tournament."
Â
The duo played in the prequalifying bracket, reaching the quarterfinals there before dropping a decision. Later Sunday evening, they found a team had dropped and they were asked to fill in the gap. Then they simply moved forward.
Â
Their run started with an 8-3 victory over Oklahoma State's Ange Oby Kajuru and Kristina Novak. Then they beat San Diego's Claudia De Las Heras and Jordyn McBride 8-5, moving them into Tuesday's quarters against Georgia's Dasha Vidmanova and Aysegul Mert.
Â
"I think what makes them successful is the experience they have. Although they haven't played together much, they both already have a lot of experience in the college tennis setting, so it allowed them to adjust to each other's game," Zinchenko said. "Also, I think they balance each other on the mental side of the game. Vici can provide that spark with some flashy winners and loud cheering, and Radka is more level-headed and calculated in her game."
Â
Buzkova had a full day, as she also was invited into the qualifying draw in singles. She dropped two tight sets to South Carolina's Sarah Hamner, 7-5, 7-6 (0) in the opening round. She will have a consolation match Tuesday, facing Lindsay Zink of North Carolina.
