Buzkova picks up singles win to start the day
CARY, N.C. – An impressive run came just short, but for the second time this week, luck has favored Radka Buzkova and Victoria Erechtchenko.
Â
Colorado State's doubles team fell 8-7 (2) to Georgia's Dasha Vidmanova and Aysegul Mert in a match where a win would have advanced them to the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships. Up 7-6, the Rams' tandem was at deuce, but dropped the game.
Â
"It was a very fun match to watch, coach and play," CSU assistant Pavel Zinchenko said. "The level was professional. Having a match point against such a strong team is definitely something that can give the girls confidence moving forward."
Â
Just like in the prequalifying round, a couple of teams which advanced decided to pull out, and Colorado State's twosome was pulled out of the hat, allowing the team to move into the main draw. In the first round, they will face the team of Amelia Honer and Kira Reuter of UC Santa Barbera, a pairing which qualified for the NCAA Tournament and reached the round of 32 last season.
Â
The CSU duo practiced together twice before being paired up for the prestigious tournament, starting first with a strong run in the pre-qualifying draw, then taking advantage of the chance to move into the qualifying draw.
Â
It's a safe bet the two will remain together, and with that, Erechtchenko is looking forward to their development.
Â
"It was incredibly fun to compete here with Radka," she said. "I felt like I improved a lot as the tourney continued. If the two of us keep growing together at this rate, I'm excited to see how far we can take it."
Â
Buzkova started her day with a convincing victory over North Carolina's Lindsay Zink in singles, advancing with a 6-1, 6-0 win. She dropped her next match to Julia Fliegner of Michigan, 6-3, 6-0.
Â
It was her second year at the event as both a singles and doubles player. It's an event she's come to appreciate for the lessons learned and especially the level of play.
Â
"This tournament definitely adds up on confidence in belief in our tennis," she said. "It is great to see and play on the highest level in the country. It motivates us in future practices and matches. We have learned a lot, and I am excited for what's next."
Â
Which happens to be a lucky draw to continue on in the tournament. As for the team when they are all together once again, the Rams will be the ITA Mountain Regionals in Salt Lake City on Oct. 18-22.
