Colorado State falls on the road at Wyoming

By: Shelby Paugh

LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Colorado State volleyball team fell to the Wyoming Cowgirls on the road Tuesday night as the Rams dropped their third conference game this season in four sets.

Despite a strong outing last weekend in Moby Arena, the Rams continue to struggle away from home as the comeback in Laramie fell just short.

The Rams lost the first set 25-22 after leading most of the way, trailing only once before the Cowgirls claimed the 22-21 lead late in the set. Colorado State's first 18 points of the night were solid. Plays at the net were made with authority, but the Rams were forced out of system in the later parts of set one and dropped the set with Wyoming finishing the set on a 6-1 run.

Colorado State hit at a .129 efficiency in the first set with 11 team kills. Outside hitter, Kennedy Stanford led the team with three kills in the first. Middle blocker Naeemah Weathers, right-side Malaya Jones and setter Emery Herman each had two kills of their own.

The Cowgirls and Rams battled back-and-forth during the second set. Ultimately, the Rams were forced out of system once more, losing the set 25-23. Stanford continued to make a positive impact for the Rams, notching four more kills in the second. Herman dished out 14 assists to Jones, Stanford and outside hitter Annie Sullivan to reach over 20 assists on the night by the time the second set was over.

With high energy and its back against the wall, Colorado-State was able to gain full control in the third set, winning the set 25-19 and extending the match into the fourth set. The Rams recorded a hitting efficiency of .457 with 16 total kills, both highs on the night. Libero Kate Yoshimoto took charge of the back row and recorded 15 digs during the match, five coming in the third set alone.

The Rams brought momentum into the fourth set, looking to make the full comeback on the road. Sullivan established her presence in the front row with five kills in the fourth set leaving her with 12 kills total on the night. After a service ace by Jones set the Rams up with a 18-12 lead, the home court came alive for the Cowgirls that resulted in the fourth set ending in a 14-6 Wyoming run enabling the Cowgirls to claim their first conference victory in four sets.

Stanford finished the night with 14 total kills while Jones recorded her second career double-double and second in just three games with 10 kills and 17 digs. The Rams also had nine team blocks with Jones recording two solo blocks and two block assists.

Other top contributors for the Rams included Karina Leber who finished the night with three block assists and six kills. Sullivan also added two solo blocks and two block assists.

The Rams will be back at home Saturday afternoon to take on San Jose State who is currently 2-2 in the Mountain West. First serve against the Spartans is set for 1 p.m. at Moby Arena.
