Colorado State hoping to book first trip to conference final
FORT COLLINS- Colorado State (12-5-3, MW: 6-3-2) will be welcomed to the semi-final round of the Mountain West Championships by San Diego State (14-3-2, MW: 9-1-1) at 2 p.m., on Wednesday. The Rams have a chance to not only make their first trip to the championship game but also a chance at retribution against the Aztecs who beat them earlier this season.
The Rams are coming off their first postseason win in program history on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Fresno State. It was the squad's 12th win of the season which is tied for most wins in a season.
Sunday was a historic day for more than one reason. Liv Stutzman's game-winning goal in the 49th minute was the first goal scored for the Rams in the postseason, who had been held scoreless in their previous two appearances. Olivia Fout scored the second goal of the match and her 12th of the season which is the most scored by a Ram in a season in programs history. Fout now sits second in points in a season with 27, just one point behind Caeley Lordemann in 2019.
The Aztecs are coming off a bye on Sunday after clinching the regular season title in their season finale against New Mexico. These two teams met less than two weeks ago in an offensive display that saw San Diego State take home the win 3-2.
Goalkeeper Shayna Ross also moved up in the record books on Sunday recording her ninth shutout of the season. As a team the Rams have held opponents scoreless in five of the last eight matches. Once the 88th minute hits on Wednesday, Ross will surpass Gabi McDonald for most minutes played by a goalkeeper in a single season
Wednesday's match will be the 21st match of the season for the Rams which will set a new high for games played as a team in a single season. Ross is of nine players who will set new marks for games played in a season when the ball is kicked Wednesday afternoon along with Avery Vander Ven, Hale Otto, Katy Coffin, Ali Yoshida, Kaitlyn Abrams, Bridget Arnold, Kenady Leighton, Taite DeLange.
The winner of Wednesday's match will move on to the championship match at noon on Saturday against the winner of the second semi-final matchup between Boise State and Utah State. All matches during the tournament can be streamed on themw.com/watch.
