Rams sit first in women’s standing after day one
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Day one of the 2023 Mountain West Championship meet kicked off with two Rams finishing atop the podium as Lexie Keller placed first in the women's pentathlon while Sarah Carter brought home the gold in the women's 5,000 meter.
Â
The conference championship meet began with the multi events Thursday morning with the men competing in the first four events of the heptathlon before the women started the first of their five events in the pentathlon. The Rams boasted four multis in the heptathlon and two in the pentathlon.
Â
Keller won the women's pentathlon while placing in the top four of each of the five events. In a season best day and claiming the second-best pentathlon finish in the country, Keller also won the shot put and long jump events. The Albuquerque native put up a personal best mark in the shot put with a throw of 14.15 meters while recording new season bests in the 60-meter hurdles, long jump and 800-meter run. Keller's total 4,306 points also set a championship meet record.
Â
Carter was the other Ram to reach the podium on day one as she placed first in the women's 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:07.28 seconds. Staying with the pack almost the whole way through the race, Carter broke out on the second to last lap and never looked back as she finished just one second off the championship meet record.
Â
Elijah Scott and Drew Thompson both had great performances on the men's side of things as they sit first and second respectively after day one in the heptathlon. Scott won the shot put and high jump events with marks of 13.47 meters and 2.03 meters respectively. Thompson won the men's long jump with a mark of 6.83 meters and placed second in the shot put with a throw of 13.36 meters. All four Rams, Scott, Thompson, Mateo Munoz and Cameron Collins recorded personal records in the shot put event.
Â
Finishing out the day with the distance medley relay, both Colorado State teams placed fourth in this event, leaving the final team scores from day one as the Rams' women's team in first place with 28 points and the men in sixth place with the heptathlon being fully scored tomorrow.
