Two Rams claim second team All-American honors during day one in Albuquerque
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The 2023 Indoor Track and Field season is starting to come to a close as day one of the NCAA Championship meet wrapped up Friday afternoon with two Rams finishing in the top ten of the nation's best athletes, both claiming second team All-American Honors.
Â
Sarah Carter finished ninth in the women's 5,000-meter run while Lexie Keller placed tenth in the women's pentathlon. Both athletes took part in their final indoor meet wearing a Ram uniform and finished their indoor seasons on a high note.
Â
Keller started the day in the pentathlon running an 8.70 second 60-meter hurdles before having a season best day in the high jump event, clearing 1.72 meters, just one one-hundredth of a meter off her indoor personal record. She then threw a mark of 13.28 meters in the shot put and jumped a mark of 5.72 meters in the long jump, entering the final event with 3,364 points.
Â
In the final event, the 800 meter run, Keller recorded a personal best time of 2:17.85 seconds to finish tenth overall in the pentathlon and claim the honor of second team All-American.
Â
"Lexie competed with class! She had more expectations and pressure this season based off her success from last year," Assistant Coach and Multi's Coach Ryan Baily said. "At this meet there isn't any room for mistakes, and although she competed well, she wasn't satisfied and gained wisdom which will greatly benefit her when she returns to the national outdoor meet in the heptathlon."
Â
Carter closed out the day for the Rams in the women's 5,000 meter as she ran a time of 16:31.52 seconds, placing ninth in the event and claiming her first All-American honor a part of the second team. Carter is Colorado State's first All-American in the women's 5K since 1997.
"We are so proud of how Sarah competed today! She came into the meet seeded 15th, and fought hard to finish 9th," said Assistant Distance Coach Kelly Hart. "The race went out tactically, and she did a good job of responding when the pace suddenly changed. This was her first time at nationals, and she finished higher at the national meet this year than she did in our conference meet last year. Her commitment to training, and the growth she's had over the past season have been very inspiring for our team."
Â
The NCAA Championship Meet and indoor season will conclude Saturday night as Gabi McDonald competes in the women's shot put event at 4 p.m. from the Albuquerque Convention Center.
