Team closes out away schedule Sunday
BOISE, Idaho. – The No. 63 ranked Rams dropped a close neutral-site match 4-3 to Utah State on Saturday, equaling the series between the teams at 10-all.
Â
Colorado State is now 13-7 on the season, 2-5 in Mountain West play. It was the eighth time the Rams have been involved in a 4-3 match this year, sustaining just their third loss in clinch situations.
Â
The day began with the Rams securing the doubles point by winning two of three spots. At the No. 2 spot, Ky Ecton and Zara Lennon defeated Sidnee Lavatai and Zeynep Naz Ozturk 6-3. The No. 3 doubles pair of Sarka Richterova and Vika Zhadzinskaya beat Maile Brilhante and Magdalena Nunez 6-4.
Â
"Getting that doubles point really helped with momentum going into singles," head coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "I think we had a good start in singles but had trouble closing out in moments."
Â
At singles, No. 1 Radka Buzkova defeated Ozturk 6-3, 6-2 and No. 4 Emily Dush beat Eugenio De Hilario of the 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Lennon battled Kung at the No. 2 spot but ultimately lost 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Richterova fell to Burton 6-4, 6-3, Zhadzinskaya lost to Nunez 6-4, 7-5, and Ecton was defeated by Annaliese County 6-3, 6-2.
Â
For Buzkova, the win was her 23rd in singles play this season, the fourth most in a year in program history. She won 25 matches a season ago, a mark which stands tied for third. Lennon's match was the decider, her first loss in three sets this season after winning her previous seven.
Â
"It was great to have Emily back in the lineup and she managed herself well after being out for a few matches, proud of her for coming out the way she did today," Tran said. "Zara's opponent played very well today, and Z was playing from behind a majority of the match. She wasn't able to pull this one out, but we know she never gives up."
Â
The Rams face Boise State at their home Sunday at 2 p.m.; there will be live stats and live coverage available.
Â
"We know tomorrow's match will be a challenge, but it will be an opportunity for us to see what we are capable of," Tran said.
