Rams Open Up Mountain West Championship Meet on High Note

Morris wins men’s javelin, Lesnar places second in women’s hammer throw

FRESNO, Calif. – The Colorado State track and field team started out day one of the Mountain West Championship Meet on a high note as the women's team exits day one in first place with 39 points and the men's team sits second place with 32 points.
 
Thursday morning kicked off with both the decathlon and heptathlon with six Rams competing in the multi events.
 
Three time All-American and senior Lexie Keller finished the day in second place after four events with 3,360 points. Keller placed third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.22 seconds, third in the high jump clearing 1.70 meters, second in the shot put throwing a mark of 12.36 meters and third in the 200 meter with a time of 25.15 seconds.
 
Fellow senior Sharde Johnson finished four of the seven heptathlon events with 3,126 points, good for fourth place after day one. Johnson recorded a personal best time in the 100 meter hurdles at 15.10 seconds before winning the high jump event clearing 1.73 meters. She then threw a mark of 10.44 meters in the shot put before recording another personal best time in the 200 meter of 25.42 seconds.
 
On the men's side of things, Drew Thompson won four of the five events in day one of the decathlon setting personal records in both the 100 meter dash and 400 meter. He also won the long jump with a mark of 6.96 meters as well as placing first in the shot put with a throw of 13.24 meters, all good for a grand day one total of 3,890 points.
 
The men's multi team is rounded out by Elijah Scott who currently sits in fifth place with 3,526 points, Cameron Collins who sits in seventh with 3,242 points and Mateo Munoz who sits in eighth with 2,931 points. All four Rams recorded personal best times in both the 100 meter dash and 400 meter.
 
The women's heptathlon will wrap up tomorrow with the long jump, javelin throw and 800 meter while the men's decathlon will finished tomorrow with the remaining half of the events; 110 meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500 meters.
 
Sophomore Mya Lesnar scored the first points for the Rams of the championship meet in the women's hammer throw as she placed second in the event with a mark of 59.14 meters. Three more Rams scored in the hammer throw including Gabi McDonald who placed fifth, Michaela Hawkins who placed sixth and Klaire Kovatch who finished seventh.
 
Staying among the throwing event, defending champion in the men's javelin throw Jackson Morris defended his crown Thursday night winning gold in the event with a throw of 70.45 meters. Morris passed on his final three attempts as he saw victory at the end of the tunnel, wining the event by over five meters. His personal best mark of 74.27 ranks tenth in the nation.
 
On the track, 11 Rams qualified for Saturday's finals heats including Quinn McConnell and Bailee Carr in the women's 800 meter, Brandon Bate, Levi Killian and Ryan Birkmeier in the men's 800 meter, Tyler Colwell and Tom Willems in the men's 200 meter, Yolonda Johnson in the women's 400 meter hurdles and Germain Barnes, Carsen Bruns and Dominic Gallelli in the men's 400 meter hurdles.
 
The late night in Fresno, California wrapped up with the men's and women's 10K finals. Sarah Carter and Annabel Stafford finished one and two for Colorado State wit senior Lily Tomasula-Martin finishing fifth. On the men's side, Mason Brown claimed gold for the Rams with Lars Mitchel placing third for a fiery finish to day one.
 
Events will resume Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. with the men's decathlon.
