Morris qualifies for NCAA Championships in men’s javelin

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Colorado State track and field team began the 2023 NCAA West Regional First Round Meet Wednesday afternoon as six Rams competed for a spot in the NCAA Championship Meet taking place in Austin, Texas June 7-10. With each event containing a field of 48 athletes, only the top twelve finishers of each event will qualify for the National Championship meet.

The day got underway for Colorado State with Jackson Morris competing in the men's javelin. Entering the competition with the sixth best mark in the region and eleventh best mark in the nation, Morris punched his ticket to Austin on his third and final throw of the day, scoring a mark of 69.59 meters. Overall, Morris finished ninth in the West Regional competition, earning his qualification into the NCAA Championship Meet.

"He made it look pretty easy," Track and Field Head Coach and throws coach Brian Bedard said. "Jackson took a few extra steps on his first approach, but composed himself on his second throw and then punched his ticket to NCAA's on throw number three."

Day one continued in the throwing world with Mariano Kis taking on the men's shot put. Finishing in the top half of the field, Kis' mark of 18.13 meters earned him twenty-fourth place, ending his season on a high note after the junior claimed gold at the 2023 Outdoor Mountain West Championship meet two weeks ago.

Over on the track, sprinters Tom Willems and Tyler Colwell both fell short of qualifying for the semifinal heats taking place Friday as Willems placed forty-fifth in the men's 200 meter and Colwell placed forty-first in the men's 200 meter.

Ending the day on the track with the men's 10,000 meter run, two Rams competed in the distance event as Mason Brown placed thirtieth overall coming in with a time of 29:15.71 seconds and Brock Dykema finished forty-fourth coming in with a time of 30:21.75 seconds.

16 more Rams are still waiting to compete at the NCAA West Regional Meet as the Colorado State women's track and field team will start its competition tomorrow before the men return to wrap up their West Regional Friday. The final day of the first round of competition will feature the women competing Saturday.
