McDonald, Lesnar and Stafford all qualify for NCAA Championships
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Day two of the NCAA West Regional Meet was another successful one for the Colorado State track and field team as three Rams punched their ticket to Austin, Texas and the NCAA Championship Meet taking place June 7-10 as both Gabi McDonald and Mya Lesnar finished among the top twelve athletes in the women's shot put event and Annabel Stafford qualified in the women's 10K run.
Â
McDonald entered the women's shot put competition as the No. 13 ranked thrower in the region while Lesnar came in ranked No. 20, but both athletes would have career days, each recording a personal best mark, in order to advance onto the NCAA Championship.
Â
McDonald finished tenth overall with a career-best mark of 17.21 meters. Lesnar followed just behind with an eleventh-place finish and a career-best mark of 17.17 meters.
Â
"In the strongest shot put competition in NCAA First Round history, Mya and Gabi were both at their best," Track and Field Head Coach and throws coach Brian Bedard said. "I was so proud of their composure and the level of coachability that they had during this competition."
Â
Lesnar just missed out on a second qualification opportunity in the women's hammer throw earlier in the day Thursday as the sophomore finished fourteenth in the field, just two spots out of qualifying. She threw a mark of 61.73 meters as a great way to end her hammer throw season.
Â
The Rams continued their outing at the West Regional Meet with Celyn Stermer competing in the women's pole vault. Stermer cleared 3.97 meters in the competition, good for a twenty-second place finish within the top half of the field.
Â
Thursday night and day two of competition was once again wrapped up with the 10,000 meter run as three Rams, Sarah Carter, Annabel Stafford and Lily Tomasula-Martin all set out with hopes of qualifying onto the next round.
Â
Stafford would take the top spot out of the three Rams and punch her ticket to Austin with a tenth-place finish and school record breaking time of 32:45.14 seconds. Stafford was the previous school record holder, but her performance in the West Regional improved her personal best time by 40 seconds.
Â
Carter would finish twenty-fifth with a time of 33:32.82 seconds with Tomasula-Martin placing thirtieth with a time of 33:44.06 seconds.
Â
The Rams will return Friday for day two of the men's events before the West Regional Meet is wrapped up with the final day of women's events, Saturday.
