Colorado State now boasts five athletes through to next round of competition
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Colorado State track and field team continued its competition at the NCAA West Regional Meet Friday afternoon as four Rams continued their hunt for a spot in the NCAA Championship Meet taking place in Austin, Texas June 7-10. The top 12 athletes in each competition will punch their ticket to Austin and earn a spot at the national championship meet.
Â
The lone Ram in Friday's competition to claim a spot in the top 12 of the west region was triple jumper Allam Bushara. Bushara, who continues to have an impressive season after winning both the indoor and outdoor Mountain West titles and breaking the Colorado State men's triple jump record in both the indoor and outdoor seasons, placed 11th in Friday's competition to punch his ticket to Austin. With a jump of 15.66 meters, Bushara will compete again in two weeks at the NCAA Championships Meet.
Â
"I never doubted he would make it. He's been too strong and consistent in training lately to not make the top 12," jumps coach Maria Creech said. "Plus, Allam loves a chase, so for him, being in 14th place before his final attempt was just the fire he needed to accomplish going to NCAA's and I can tell he is not done yet and ready to hit another big one this season."
Â
Before Bushara's qualification, day three started out with Jackson Morris participating in his second event of the West Regional Meet, the men's discus. Entering the competition with the 21st best mark in the field, Morris placed just above his projection with a 20th place finish Friday afternoon, throwing a top mark of 55.54 meters. Morris will still advance to the NCAA Championship Meet in the men's javelin throw which he qualified for during Wednesday's opening day of competition.
Â
The one and only track event of the day that featured the Rams was the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase where seniors Thomas Chaston and Dawson Besst both finished their careers in a Colorado State uniform off strong. Besst ran his best, recording a personal best time of 8:43.06, good for 22nd place. Chaston followed behind with a time of 9:00.42, placing 37th as both athletes will finish their careers apart of the top five steeplechase times in CSU history.
Â
Colorado State will wrap up its time at the West Regional Meet tomorrow as eight Rams will compete in the final day of competition Saturday starting with Gabi McDonald, Mya Lesnar and Michaela Hawkins in the women's discus beginning at 2 p.m. mountain time.
