Sofia Torres shot up the leaderboard on Tuesday
WESTFIELD, Ind. – Sofia Torres shot up the leaderboard and etched her name in another spot in the CSU women's golf record book on Tuesday. The junior moved 22 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 19th, as she shot a 2-under, 70. The mark is the second-best NCAA Regional or Championship score by a Rams' women golfer.
"Sofi had a great day today and got off to a fast start," assistant coach Brady Campbell said. "She held her own against a great regional field and is in the top 20 going into the final round. She has put herself in a great spot heading into tomorrow."
Torres got out to a torrid start with birdies on three of her first five holes. It started with a birdie on the 140-yard, par 3 second and she added back-to-back birdies on holes four and five. A bogey on the seventh hole had her make the turn with a 2-under, 34.
The back nine started well with a birdie on the 10th hole, but Torres gave the stroke right back with a bogey on 11. Another bogey had her at 1-under for the round, until she closed the day with a birdie on the 354-yard par 4 closing hole.
The 70 is two strokes behind Katrina Prendergast's 68 for the best score at an NCAA Regional or Championship in program history. Torres matched Prendergast's 36-hole record with a total of 144 through two rounds.
She tees off the final round of the Westfield Regional on Wednesday at 6:55 am MT. To advance to the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Torres must be the top individual on a non-advancing team. Live results of the final round can be found on GolfStat.
